The Academy Awards Version of the Bootleg News...
28 Feb 2005

Welcome to the Academy Awards version of the HotWacks On-line Bootleg News for February 27th. What do the Oscars have to do with Bootleg Releases? Not a damn thing! Bootleg News and Releases we learned about this week...

The latest out of Japan over the weekend...from the Zion Label is THE DOOBIE BROTHERS "Closer Than Before", a 2CD set that documents a recording from the Festival Hall in Osaka, Japan on October 13th, 1981. Wardour has an outstanding release by ELTON JOHN that takes us all the way back to the beginning. The single disc title is simply called "New York 1970" or subtitled, "The 17-11-70 Outtakes". OK, they didn't quite translate that date accurately but we'll cut them some slack...this one looks incredible as it features the complete November 17th, 1970 WABC-FM performance, along with the ELTON JOHN BAND live at The Fillmore East a few days later on the 21st of November and both recordings are soundboard sources...on Trial CDR is ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS "The Delivery Man in U.K.", a nice recent recording taken from their Hammersmith Odeon show on February 10th, 2005 on 2 discs...I think I mentioned this one last week but what the hell, also from Trial and released this past week is BILLY JOEL "Sydney 1976", a soundboard from his May 19th, 1976 appearance Down Under...rounding out this latest blurb is a cool looking and sound THIN LIZZY DVD release, "Dominion 1982" from the Power Gate DVD Masters Label. This video title is a Pro-shot, single DVD-R that compiles the feature piece - the bands' April 30th, 1982 concert at The Dominion Theater in London- along with some rare TV appearances, promotional videos and interviews...from Gypsy Eye is BOSTON "Party At Stadium 1979", soundboard from Giants Stadium on June 17th, 1979...and from the Guitar Power Label, JEFF BECK "Live By Power" which houses a recording from Boston 1975...Picadilly Circus brings us PAUL McCARTNEY "Perfect Harmony" which is also a soundboard from the L.A. Forum on November 27th, 1989...ROD STEWART "Live At Abbey Road" is a new single disc soundboard release from Mainstream that documents his special show held in London and was taped & then aired on December 11th, 2004. Sister Morphine has "The Keith Richards Benefit Concert" slated as their next CD Release...the double-disc set is likely just a Cool Cool Hand remaster attempt at the common soundboard of the April 22nd, 1979 tape that features sets by both THE NEW BARBARIANS and THE ROLLING STONES.

From budget DVD-R/CDR Label, Cat's Meow, comes a handful of quality DVD titles this past week...THE BEACH BOYS "Melbourne '78", a Pro-shot "Mike Love-fest" for collectors on a single disc release. This title features their complete Myer Music Bowl concert in Melbourne, Australia on March 3rd, 1978. BILLY JOEL "Classic Piano Man" captures vintage BILLY JOEL live at The BBC Theater, London on March 13th, 1978, with bonus footage from Tokyo 1991...both sources said to be in stunning Pro-shot/Soundboard quality..."Best Of The Beat Club" is simply a compilation of early 70's, trippy German performance/promotional clips from the likes of: Dr. Hook, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Zager & Evans, Chicago, Badfinger, the Byrds, the Beach Boys, 10CC, Johnny Rivers, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Bee Gees, Kinks, Vanilla Fudge, Free, Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper, Three Dog Night, Spencer Davis Group, Procol Harum, Canned Heat, Steppenwolf, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Yes, Jeff Beck, T Rex, Roxy Music, & Thin Lizzy!...Cat's Meow also has a couple of classic versions of THE ROLLING STONES "Montreux Rehearsals" (1972 Tour Rehearsals in both the Old Grey Whistle Test version as well as The Beat Club version, with bonus footage from The Dick Cavett Show live at MSG on July 25th, 1972 and the 1973 Australian Tour Diary.)...and THE WHO "Germany 1981" which is, of course, their complete March 28th, 1981 appearance on RockPalast German TV.

From Digital Gang Productions (DGP)comes some new titles and release news...BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND "Lost In The Flood" is the latest Bruce release and is comprised of a rare audio document from the European 1975 Tour - this, recorded at the Rai Congrescentrum in Amsterdam on November 23rd...and is said to be an outstanding audience recording. DGP has "Shake Your Foundations" on deck for release in early March...this is another stellar version of the notorious June 12th, 1985 concert in Rotterdam where the bands' system damaged the foundation of the Stadium...Also, the label has a new ROLLING STONES title called "Stoned In Toronto 1975" and features their June 17th, 1975 performance at Maple Leaf Gardens...related updates from DGP...the 2nd Pressing edition of the BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN title "First Night Stand At The Palace" has been postponed until late March-early April...plus, the long awaited TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS Live Anthology project is still being assembled and is tracking to be a late Spring release. The latest LED ZEPPELIN title from Eelgrass is an "upgraded" version of "St. Louis Blues", the superb February 16th, 1975 soundboard that was originally released a month ago by Empress Valley...not sure what could possibly be improved upon here. Eelgrass have typically offered direct copies of Empress Valley titles but at a much cheaper price for silver disc boots...we'll have to wait and see on this one.

That's all this week in the News here at HotWacks On-line, thanks for joining me here and keep checking in for updates throughout the week. It appears "Million Dollar Baby" was the big winner at The 77th Academy Awards...this is the first year EVER that I haven't seen any of the movies up for the awards but everyone I've talked to say this one was their favorite. Anyway, I'll meet you back here next Sunday. Have a great week.
