The Bootleg News 2006 is off and running...
09 Jan 2006

Hello and welcome back to the HotWacks On-line Bootleg News for 2006! Seems even the labels took some time off the last couple of weeks as well. Anyway, we certainly hope the coming year holds good things for you all. On with the News.

Plenty of ROLLING STONES bootleg releases to summarize for this first column of 2006...Sister Morphine will issue the Bigger Bang Tour title, "All Sold Out", from Anaheim on November 4th, 2005. This is audience sourced of course and The Good Sister tacks on a couple of bonus tracks from the 2 Hollywood Bowl Concerts which took place a couple of nights later. I should confirm that the 2 Empress Valley STONES titles from December were indeed "Welcome To Boulder" (October 4th, 1981 soundboard) and "Sweet Home Chicago" (November 24th, 1981 soundboard)...In other '81 Stones bootleg news Dog n Cat Records have continued to release an incredible string of previously unavailable soundboards...the latest announcements include the 4CD set "Going To A Go-Go" which will feature both shows from the Pontiac Silverdome on November 30th and December 1st, 1981...then there is the other 4CD title "Echoes Of Old Applause" which documents both Syracuse, New York concerts from the Carrier Dome on November 27th
&
28th, 1981...Dog n Cat will also release the Bigger Bang shows, "It's Sweet Virginia" from Charlottesville, North Carolina on October 5th of 2005 (the bomb scare show)...and..."Rain Fall Down" from the Wachovia Center show in Philadelphia on October 10th...The Godfather Records also have their version of the Wachovia show out called "Jammin By My Side", and is a more deluxe package than the DAC title. Other releases of late from The Godfather Records include...U2 "40 Minute Version Of Bad", a nice recording from Madison Square Garden, October 10th, 2005 in another deluxe presentation which includes a 6-page booklet - and of course a marathon version of "Bad" (I can just hear the political rant from Bono now...)...then there is the other U2 title "I Am Because We Are", which documents the October 8th show at MSG in comparible quality...Godfather has also issued PINK FLOYD "Old Symphonies" with 2 old soundboard recordings from the BBC Paris Theater in 1970 and the May '68 show from The Piper Club in Rome and is an incredibly beautiful digipack release.

In LED ZEPPELIN boot news...Genuine Masters has officially kicked off 2006 by announcing their first Hybrid DVD-Audio title of the new year, "Pb", the legendary and oft-bootlegged FM broadcast from Vancouver on March 21st, 1970. GM will feature 2 versions of the recording on this medium...a 1st generation pre-broadcast tape and a virgin vinyl source from the old TMOQ version...GM's "Pb" will also be the first title of theirs to feature a 16:9 Widescreen "image montage", or slideshow. Seems the ZEPPELIN show from Montreal '72 is the current focus for a couple of labels...Wendy Records will issue the 2CD set "Montreal Gazette" while Tarantura is getting  their more Deluxe 5CD Montreal '72 Box Set ready for market as "The Barber Shop Quartet"...also coming from Tarantura is their own version of the Seattle '75 Box Set titled "Blow Jobs", of all things. Just so we are up to date, over the holidays Akashic released yet another version of "Listen To This, Eddie" from the L.A. Forum on June 21st, 1977 and is said to be as complete and comparible in sound quality to Empress Valley's 2003 Promotional Christmas Version.

As always, there continues to be new, and some old rehashed, BOB DYLAN...the latest of which includes a nice sounding, and scarce, 4CD set from Seymour Records called "Complete Before The Flood" and is getting some rave feedback from early reports...the title features both shows from the L.A. Forum on February 14th, 1974 with THE BAND from newly discovered upgraded source tapes. Also from Seymour Records is "Complete Hard Rain -Rolling Thunder Review 1976" a 2CD set plus DVD-R of the Television Broadcasts from Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Clearwater, Florida. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN collectors should seek out "One Thousand And One American Nights - Remastered" from Anubis Records...finally, a speed-corrected version of the Tampa recording from The Jai Alai Auditorium on November 17, 1975 and on silver disc too! There have been a handful of new ELVIS PRESLEY boots to hit collectors' hands over the last month...the latest in the "Classic Series" from Fort Baxter is "Last Tango In Tahoe"...a supposedly "improved" version of the May 27th, 1974 3 a.m. closing show, complete with 12-page booklet but will be a very limited pressing. Coming this month from S&R Records Label is "Elvis - Setting The Standard", a previously unreleased audience recording of his August 17, 1971 Las Vegas Dinner Show. The 50-minute performance is said to be ELVIS' strongest show of the Summer '71 season and comes with an 8-page color booklet, numbered collectors' card and if that isn't enough to lather you up, the first 100 copies will also include a special DVD containing rare clips of Elvis performing in 1971. Speaking of ELVIS on DVD...keep an eye out for a set of bootleg DVD's issued last month called "That's The Way It Is - The Best Of The Outtakes" Volumes 1 & 2.

Rounding up other releases to mention...on the Howard Carter Label comes FRANK ZAPPA 3CD "Trouble Every Day", a pair of soundboard recordings from Goteburg, Sweden on September 25, 1974 and November 6th, 1974 in Pittsburgh. If an assortment of oddities is more your style, look for NEW ORDER "Basement Tapes" on the Back To Zero Label...they've assembled a spectacular collection of 1980 demos, studio rehearsals from the early 80's and, the '81 Hurt Rehearsal, 1984 Lowlives Rehearsals and much more. Whoever spent mega-bucks for some VELVET UNDERGROUND rare acetates and test pressings got right to business and had them transferred to CD!..."Ultimate Mono and Acetates Collection" from Nothing Songs Limited is a 3CD set with a treasure trove of test pressings, rare mono releases and whatever else...the set is limited to 500 copies out of Japan and is nothing short of amazing. We mentioned this new release from Paddington this week...DEREK & THE DOMINOS "Complete Fillmore Tapes" is a definitive 10CD box set containing both audience and soundboard recordings of the Early and Late Shows from October 23rd, 1970, along with just the Late Show from October 24th. Finally, the latest release news out of Japan this week features a new YES 2CD set from Sirene..."Solid Time Of Change" contains an extraordinary audience recording taped on November 11th, 1972 at Duke University in North Carolina, of all places...I should add that around Christmas, Sirene also issued a superb stereo soundboard recording of vintage PROCOL HARUM, "Stockholm 1971 Pre-FM Master", which was recorded on October 16, 1971 at Folkets Hus in Stockholm...Zion has JOURNEY "Majestic Night" coming out this week and captures the band live at Shibuya-Kokaido, Tokyo, Japan on the 18th of April, 1979.

That's it for starters! The News Ticker is well-oiled and will continue to feed you updates throughout the week. You know where to get the latest and please join me back here next Monday for a complete summation of bootleg scuttlebutt. Have a good one!
