New Beach Boys, Macca and Nirvana leading the Bootleg News this week...
20 Feb 2006

Well, did anyone in the States catch the interview Sunday morning on CBS-TV News with Bill Sagan of Wolfgang's Vault?  It seems that everyone I talked with in the last 24 hours caught it, but me! Just a comment on what I've heard about the interview is that Bill Graham's estate didn't really have a clear understanding of exactly what they were sitting on with his archive. To put it into perspective, Sagan bought the collection for $5 Million and current estimates on what the archive is worth put the figure at "roughly" $200 million! With what we have seen and heard already on this stuff, I say that number is somewhat conservative when you start figuring in the video vault along with the audio - and then the memorabilia! This topic will be continued I'm sure. For anyone not grasping what in the hell I am talking about, see my February 8th column to get caught up.  RHAR February 8, 2006

It's fun to break the news on a release literally hot off the press and this week our near-exclusive at HotWacks On-line is Hang Ten's new BEACH BOYS live document, "A Vocal Element - Live 1967" 2CD set...the title brings together 3 complete soundboard recordings from the bands' "Thanksgiving Tour" of November '67 with another partial soundboard from the same tour...the set also includes some bonus radio ads both the group - and individual members recorded in 1966 which also includes former Beatles' Press Agent Derek Taylor. The promo blurb from Hang Ten declares "A Vocal Element" a "treat for the eyes and ears" but one thing is for sure - it is surely another fun release from a label that knows their stuff and paces the projects to provide classic material in proper presentation.  It's nice to know they have a sense of humor over there as well.  The release info exclaims " New BEACH BOYS  release on the HANG TEN MEDIA label in conjunction with SUE YOUR BROTHER RECORDS!!"  This hobby was meant to be fun and the best entrepreneurs to have brought underground recordings to our sweaty little hands have always kept that in mind and have infused a good degree of humor into releases along the way.

There are sure some excellent compilation projects that have surfaced this past week...the first one I want to point out is the NIRVANA double-DVD just out from Sappy Music Entertainment titled "Stage Perfect Collection"...the set boasts nearly 4 hours of footage, including the near-70 minute pre-broadcst version of the MTV Unplugged performance from November 18th, 1993..."Live & Loud" on MTV filmed in Seattle on December 13th, a January 10th, 1992 "Unseen Live" feature from MTV Studios, the 45-minute broadcast version of MTV Unplugged, bonus clips that include both Saturday Night Live appearances on NBC-TV in '92-'93, snippets from the Paradiso proshot footage in '91 and also the Opera House in Toronto in 1991, plus a an August '93 Kurt Cobain interview...sounds like one of those proverbial "must haves" to me. Coming very soon from the Picadilly Circus Label is the 2CD set, PAUL McCARTNEY "All Access Program" a collection of various soundboard recordings from assorted locations like the Super Bowl performance from Jacksonville in January of 2005, Dallas and Miami soundchecks and of course much more.

We shared with you the batch of Japanese Label releases yesterday on the Ticker...Beano has their new ERIC CLAPTON "The 13-Piece" 2CD release slated to hit the streets this week...the title documents his Journeyman show at Royal Albert Hall on January 26th, 1990.  Would this be Orchestra Night? Sirene's Silver Disc titles this week include KING CRIMSON "Jumble Of Lies" 1CD which a nice and rare audie sourcetape from Rome at the Palazzo Del Sports on April 6th, 1973...Two more PINK FLOYD titles this week as well from Sirene, "Absolutely Years" 2CD is yet another version of the Wembley shows on November 14th (pre-FM soundboard) and November 15th, 1974 stereo soundboard of only the Dark Side segment of the show..."Dark Music" 1CD leaves me a bit skeptical, claiming to be and "upgraded version from the reel master", a claim also made about a year ago to a tape shared via Bit Torrent on the net. Could be the exact same source, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but let's hope Sirene does indeed provide us that upgrade because it is a nice live interpretation of, again, "Dark Side Of The Moon". On the labels' CDR schedule this week is SUPERTRAMP "Fool's Overature" a 1CDR + DVD-R package of stereo soundboards from Queen Mary's College in London on November 10th, 1977 and Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo on May 28th & 29th, 1976...the proshot video on the DVD is from July 23rd, 1983 in Munich...there is also STACKRIDGE "Reading Festival 1972" 1CDR and THE SOFT MACHINE LEGACY "Strange Comforts" taped live in Milton Keynes, UK at The Stables Theater on February 1st, 2006. DAVID BOWIE collectors, Trial has a batch of shows getting churned out as I type...too bad they're all CDR releases but they look good nontheless..."Jungle Burning Bright" 2CDR is supposedly a great sounding audience tape from Yokahama Stadium, Japan on October 25th, 1983..."Done Without Dogs" is a soundboard/audience mix taped in Reichtag, Berlin during The Glass Spider Tour on June 6th, 1987..."Performing Arts" is from The Sound+Vision Tour with Adrian Belew, the featured show is the NEC Arena in Birmingham, UK on March 19th, 1990 in very good audience
quality.

Quite a few DVD boots to relay this week too! There is a label called Solid Air that I haven't heard of before (but that doesn't mean much!) that has a couple of very pertinent and interesting titles recently released...JANIS JOPLIN "Janis Blues" is a proshot/soundboard production that looks simply fabulous!...It features both San Francisco and Monterey performances from 1967, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Woodstock '69 plus Calgary and Toronto 1970!  It's about damn time, I have to get this one. When was the last time you saw a JANIS release of any kind? Then, there is GENESIS "Gabriel 1972-1974", this one documents the PETER GABRIEL-led GENESIS during their theatrical pinnacle featuring live concert and TV appearance footage that again sounds primo! I need to point out a release from Apocalypse Sound that I forgot to mention a few weeks ago with their batch of DVD titles...AS has put the polished press to FRANK ZAPPA "Archives", another proshot/soundboard DVD of rare BBC TV appearances from 1968-1977 including the "Yellow Sharks" rehearsal documentary!?! (someone will have to fill me in, I confess I have no idea what that is.)  Not sure if this comes courtesy of Treasure Stone but it sure smells like it!...there's a new Japanese ROLLING STONES double-DVD-R I need to mention called "Voodoo Dome" which captures the complete proshot video of their Tokyo Dome concert on December 3rd, 1995...Racket Queen have a cool looking NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE double-DVD-R themselves called "Jailbreak"...and it features a 1986 San Francisco show at The Cow Palace on November 21st in proshot quality...it runs almost two-and-a-half hours. I'm almost positive that the Ladybird label was issuing their PRINCE DVD's on silver disc but this latest batch are apparently released on DVD-R..."Parade Live" is from Cobo Hall in Detroit on June 7, 1986 and is supposed to be outstanding with proshot video and soundboard audio as well...then there is "Royal Visions Vol. 1" compiling promotional videos from 1977 to 1984...16 clips in perfect quality, the disc runs about 75 minutes..."Royal Visions Vol. 2" features 24 vids from 1984 to 1991, again in amazing quality. On the Surfer Girl label comes THE GO-GO's "Tonight" 1DVD-R, a proshot/soundboard disc which features their complete Rockpalast show in Germany 1982 in perfect quality from the master tape...(so where are the other masters of THE KINKS, RORY GALLAGHER, THE J. GEILS BAND, etc.???)

Some great stuff to point out in the loos-ends department this week too...if you are a fan of the best rock movie production ever, that would be "The Last Waltz", the new 4CDR set from Hot Stuff certainly caught your eye when it appeared on the News Ticker this week. "The Complete Last Waltz" features the complete, unedited, raw soundboard of the entire evenings' show at Winterland on Thanksgiving 1976. This is free of all the overdubs folks, and while Scorpio or whomever issued that deluxe package about 10 years ago - it wasn't complete from what I recall. So, here you go! Excellent tapes just continue to surface. Now, let's get on to the Silver Disc releases...some items that eluded my net over the past couple of weeks here: Face To Face Records put out OASIS "Noize Essential Rarities", 16 unreleased tracks from their creative peak back in 1995-1996...from White Flag we have THIN LIZZY "Tracks From The Vaults: More John Peel Sessions", 17 tracks from the core of classic Lizzy from 1972-to 1977, includes Top Of The Pops appearances and more...The Godfather Records issued DEPECHE MODE "Angels With Silver Wings", a single disc soundboard from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California on December 11th, 2005, plus some bonus tracks from their 1998 show at The Shrine Auditorium in L.A. with guest Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)....JOHNNY CASH "The Golden Unplugged Album" was issued on European Import and has 27 rare acoustic tracks in superb quality (live and studio outtakes)...from Back To Zero, 2 titles: NEW ORDER 1CD "Basement Tapes", an assortment of oddities, demos and outtakes...THE DAMNED "We're The Damned" 2CD, captures the band live at The Quattro in Tokyo on July 3rd, 2005.  A couple of other PINK FLOYD releases...on Moonage Daydream there is "Magic Encounters", a 2CD of the excellent Ivor Wynne concert in Hamilton, Ontario on June 28, 1975, plus bonus tracks...Face To Face Records has also issued "Dark Side Of The Moon Live", curiously, a single CD of the Dark Side segment from Boston Gardens on June 6th, 1975-with bonus tracks and housed in a very nice Digipack...again from Face To Face is LED ZEPPELIN "Demos", a single disc featuring 18 studio soundboard tracks recorded at Island Studios from 1970 to 1972 and more...this stuff has been released in various incarnations but here is a nice budget compilation that you cannot go wrong with.

People, I'm out of breath.  Gonna bid you a good week and urge you to keep tabs on the latest via the HotWacks On-line News Ticker.  I will see you right back here next Monday.  While you are here though, check out all the new reviews posted by the team over the weekend!  Thanks for the support.

P.S. Watch for numerous releases of THE ROLLING STONES free concert in Rio from this past weekend (2/18/06)...from the desktop to the premium Japanese Labels - everyone will likely be getting in the act with this one being broadcast every place imaginable.  Plus the fact that the band filmed it themselves for official DVD release, probably with other European footage to come.
