Spotlight on new Hendrix releases, Goodbye Syd...and a Special Offer from HW Press...
17 Jul 2006

Before we delve right into the release news for the week, I want to give you all the heads-up on a special offer for HotWacks On-line members to pick up Hot Wacks Book 15 - the 800 page discography from Hot Wacks Press pretty cheap!  Look for details to come here at the site over the next 5 days but this offer will run for 1 week only from July 24th through July 31st so,  if you do not own this book...here is an incredible opportunity to score it.  This one was published in 1993 but I tell you, I consult and refer to it often.  It's simply a must-have for collectors.  Bob Walker at Hot Wacks Press just contacted me and we're finalizing the details.  Stay tuned for more on that!

Scorpio made the biggest splash this week by announcing a trilogy of JIMI HENDRX EXPERIENCE titles..."Second Gig At Denmark" 1CD is sourced from master  tapes of the trios' performance at the Tivolis Koncertsal Kobenhavn in Denmark on January 7th, 1968...also included as a bonus is a May 1968 interview with JIMI by M. Fulton from KSAN Radio, San Francisco conducted at CHAS CHANDLER's office (Jimi's Manager) in London...."Live At The Koln" 1CD also utilizes a master source tape and this live show is The Sporthalle in Koln, Germany on January 13th, 1969...and "Live At The Dans In" 1CD is recorded live in Grona Lund, Sweden on September 4, 1967 at a venue called The Dans In.

In other Bootleg News from this past week...Some really incredible source tapes of the original JEFF BECK GROUP were shared over the last 3-4 weeks via internet Bit Torrent and the crux of the recordings cover nearly every performance the BECK, ROD STEWART, RON WOOD, MICKY WALLER & NICKY HOPKINS line-up made at The Boston Tea Party in 1968 and 1969...and I'm pleased to see that some label jumped on these because they deserve attention!..Out soon from Guitar Cycle will be the 3CD set, "Loud And Heavy" which will feature all their shows at The Boston Tea Party in 1969 so look for that one, the audience tapes are really great - actually a couple of the 1968 ones are even better so I'm hoping those get the same treatment soon...they are raw and fun.  Also announced this week from Wardour is an excellent JEFF BECK title as well..."Definition Of Blow" is 1CD + bonus CDR set that captures a superb August 5th, 1975 audience tape from Nagoya, Japan on the feature disc...and a different source tape of the same gig on the bonus disc aptly titled "Another Tape".  Speaking of excellent sourcetapes and sharing via the internet...I need to spread the word on a great new LED ZEPPELIN recording shared over the weekend, taped by the infamous "Mr. Freezer"  in New Orleans on May 14th, 1973...we have been fortunate enough to have a soundboard of this concert for years but somehow the Freezer man knew right where to sit and catch these shows for posterity as well....there is an ambience and a mood he seems to catch and this is really a new take on an old show - watch for the premium Japanese Labels to jump on this over the next month with their commercial boot versions.  Let's hope Mr. Freezer shares more of his archive...Wendy Records next couple of LED ZEPPELIN releases will include the classic "For Badgeholder's Only" 3CD set, recorded live at the Los Angeles Forum on June 23, 1977 and features the infamous guest appearance by KEITH MOON who "duets" with JOHN BONHAM on "Moby Dick" as well as the encores of "Whole Lotta Love/Rock And Roll"...also coming from Wendy is a "definitive" version of "Listen To This, Eddie" - for those keeping tally, this is their 3rd release of this essential ZEP show from the forum on June 21, 1977.

Dog N Cat Records are certainly one of the most active of the ROLLING STONES bootleg labels - rivaling the output of their counterparts Sirene, Wardour, etc....and one of the good things the pause in the Bigger Bang Tour has provided us is a reprieve from those related recordings - though DAC has done an outstanding job and I'm sure we'll see last weeks' shows from Milan and Vienna surface very soon(The Godfather Records will issue the Milan show from July 11th)...in the meantime we have this week, the new title "Pavillon De Paris" 2CD which will feature the June 4th, 1976 audience tape (originally used for "Alright Charlie Watts" on Dirty Work Productions Label and "Vive La France" from Vinyl Gang) but Dog N Cat will also include some mono mixes from the Paris performances that were taped for French TV - I think the bulk of these were from the June 6th show but we'll have to wait and see what the content actually is.  In other ROLLING STONES boot news, the SODD Label will put a contemporary twist on what is known as "The Lost Live Album" by releasing "Philadelphis Special" 2CD that features soundboard recordings from the Phillie shows on July 20th and July 21st, 1972 and Brussels and London '73 soundboards (not to be confused with DAC's "The Great Lost Live Album" title coming out soon which features the New York evening show at MSG on July 25, 1972).

The details are a bit sketchy but Seymour Records will release the MIKE BLOOMFIELD set "The Other Side Of Old Waldorf" which would imply a San Francisco performance at The Old Waldorf but I do not have details yet of a date...all we can share right now is that it's a 2CD set + bonus CDR.  Mid 70's NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE always gets us excited and it appears a new/old DVD release from Reprisal Records will provide a re-issue of last years' DVD from Scorpio, this one is called "Dancing Across The Waters" and features the proshot 1976 video performances from The Budokan in Tokyo on March 11th, and The Hammersmith Odeon in London later that month -plus the bonus feature "On The Streets Of Glasgow" from April '76...Fans of BOB DYLAN's XM Radio Show may be interested to learn that the Japanese CDR Label, Franny Records, will issue the 6-disc set "Theme Time Radio Hour Vol. 1" featuring the first six shows from May 3rd through June 7th, 2006...and finally, from an unidentified label comes the announcement of a new PINK FLOYD boot CD called "On Stage With Zappa" a live recording from Day #2 of Festival Actuel in Amougies, Belgium on October 25, 1969, more details to be shared as they are available.

On that note, we said goodbye to another influential soul from the music world this past week.  ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT, the heart of the original PINK FLOYD past away at the age of 60 on July 11th.  A Japanese Retailer capitalized on the FM Broadcast of the first half of ROGER WATERS' concert in Lucca, Italy on July 12th where he performed an emotional version of "Wish You Were Here" dedicated, of course, to his old mate SYD.  I found the artwork for their free CDR offering perfectly captured the emotion of the moment and wanted to post it here tonight.  SYD BARRETT left his mark on the swinging London scene in 1967-early '68 which spawned all sorts of artistic directions in years to follow...just look at what became of PINK FLOYD.

That's it for this week!  Don't forget to check back on how you can obtain a mint copy of the essential bootleg reference book, Hot Wacks XV - we will facilitate your acquisition and details to be posted probably over the coming weekend as the sale will be in effect the last week of the month, July 24th-31st.  We'll email out a reminder to the membership this weekend too. Thanks for stopping in and look for more reviews to post this week also.  Have a good one!
