The Heavy Balloon dominates a light week...
15 Oct 2007

Instead of the LED ZEPPELIN MSG Working Tapes title arriving to mailboxes around the globe (though I'm sure many will still receive their copies), Empress Valley recalled the title after pressure from the collecting community called their bluff, or was it ignorance?  Doesn't matter, the title was formally recalled and refunds/exchanges offered through the labels' distribution channels on Friday.  It turns out that the content provided on the 3CD + DVD deluxe package wasn't sourced from the Kevin Shirley working tapes for the new remastered edition officially arriving mid-November...they got ahold of one of the notorious fan-produced sets from Winston Remasters, as they are called in Zep trading circles.  Winston himself posted the actual sources of his set (which he claims he only gave 5 sets out in 2003) over on the Royal Orleans (Presence) site.  Here's a breakdown of what supposedly Empress Valley had on their set:

CD 1
1. Jones saying "Tour Dates... This is tomorrow" / Bron-Yr-Aur - SRS DVD
2. Rock and Roll - SRS DVD
3. Celebration Day - SRS CD
4. Black Dog - SRS DVD
5. Over the Hills and Far Away - 1G>DAT5 (remaster)
6. Misty Mountain Hop - LZ DVD
7. Since Ive Been Loving You - LZ DVD
8. No Quarter - SRS CD
9. Song Remains the Same - SRS CD
10. Rain Song - SRS CD

CD 2
1. Dazed and Confused - SRS CD
2. Stairway to Heaven - SRS CD
3. Moby Dick - SRS CD

CD 3
1. Heartbreaker - Safe Crackers Bootleg (remaster)
2. Whole Lotta Love - SRS CD
3. The Ocean - LZ DVD
4. Organ Solo / Thank You - Gran Finale Bootleg (remaster) / Plant saying "Its the Cosmic Energy" - SRS DVD
5. Jimmy Page King Biscuit SRS Promo interview - MP3 converted to WAV from Napster

Inbetween song Plantations - With Fake AUD cheer Mixed in..
CD 1-2 Cherry Picked from 7/28 show 1stGen>DAT5
CD 3 Cherry Picked from Safecrackers / Grand Finale Bootleg

...so, a far cry from multi track tapes.  However, the label didn't waste any time getting their next release out to the circuit...released in Japan Sunday was "Listen! Listen! Listen To Me!", a 2CD set that apparently utilizes two different sources of the Zep performance in Boston on September 6, 1971...(thanks again to the Japanese Broken Arrow Site for the timely scans and info!)

Led Zeppelin Listen! Listen! Listen To Me! Empress Valley

New announcements today out of Japan include another LED ZEPPELIN version of the infamous "Destroyer" concert soundboard from Cleveland on April 27, 1977...this one issued via non-label producers on silver disc.  This 3CD set is limited to 200 copies and utilizes an incredibly clean and crisp sounding source posted on the internet over at Dime-A-Dozen about 3 weeks ago or so.  The actual information on the "Weedwacker Version" is this:

Lineage: Master Cassettes>1st gen reels(Maxell XLII)>pc>wav(24/96)>wav(16/44 w/Adobe Audition)>tracking(cd wave)>flac
Transferred by: weedwacker

Notes:
These reels were lent to me by Bill B. to transfer.

Bill B's notes:
D.F. and I would coach the Seattle Kingdome video director (N.W.) on songs to be played at upcoming major shows. Basically he was "studying up" on song placement and solos to be expected. Having worked at both the Superdome and in Cleveland, N.W. had friends at other venues. He simply asked a friend working the show in Cleveland to get him a copy of the show and fire it off to us in Seattle. The guy brought in his home deck, walked up to the board, and being on the crew they plugged him in. Just that simple. These reels are a direct copy of the master cassettes done in the early 80’s on a brand new Akai GX-77 reel deck using Maxell XLII tape at 7.5 ips and the rare EE equalization that the tape required. I personally have a better trust in this source than I do in the actual masters now. The masters still exist, but they aren’t going in the mail, and after so many years, I just think that 7.5 ips quarter inch reels are the best way to go. They may never have been played before Weedwacker’s efforts. I kept a second “play” copy on Maxell UD reels for listening. This source is pristine, not one of the bootleg versions, not off crude cassette copies from me in the 80’s. This is the real deal. Thank you Weedwacker for stepping up to make this happen, you and Darrell, and NW, and whoever the guy was that plugged in.

The Japanese information seems to get it's information crossed on this one a little bit as the source above surfaced right after a MASTER REELS > DAT > CDR > EAC > WAV > FLAC lineage version was uploaded by trader Bp over at Dime and the information on this new "Destroyer" appears to cross over the lineage of the two, but I'm sure it's the initial one I have cited.  I downloaded both myself and this Weedwacker Version would be the one most likely to be leveraged by the bootleggers.  I still prefer the original 2000 Empress Valley  release myself, but these are superb as well.

Led Zeppelin Destroyer Japanese No Label      Deep Purple Oldenburg 1971 Darker Than Blue

New from Darker Than Blue is DEEP PURPLE "Oldenburg 1971", a stellar sounding single disc of a live performance at Wesser Ems Halle in Oldenburg, Germany on April 7th, 1971...On a related note, a label identifying itself as The Swingin' Pig made an appearance from the Underground last week to issue RAINBOW "Lost And Never Found", a 2CD set that presents band rehearsals for their 1976 World Tour as well as a 1975 RITCHIE BLACKMORE and RAINBOW Radio Special...Just announced from MisterClaudel is THE BEATLES Multi Track working tapes presented as "Sgt. Pepper's At 40 Years Anniversary" that utilizes some newly released tapes from collector's grips that were shared/aired online in September...Last week I failed to point out a new RAMONES DVD on the scene that was issued earlier in the month from Pinhead Productions and features their 1977 Don Kirshner's Rock Concert appearance and 2 proshot Houston performances on February 19, 1977 and July 17, 1977...the Picadilly Circus Label has released "The Complete iTunes Festival 2007" 2CD + DVD of the July 5th event that featured PAUL McCARTNEY, KASABIAN and others from mostly an audience source tape with soundboard tracks mixed in...the DVD is sourced from proshot video from the event...and finally an addition to last weeks' Lost Dog Records releases...there is a 3rd NEIL YOUNG release I failed to include..it is apparently the unreleased 1996 High Defintion CD of "Times Fade Away" , the 1973 official Live Album from the Reprise Label...

That's what I could scrounge up for information for us this week!...Thanks for swinging by and we'll look for more stuff over the next 7 days to feed the hunger.  Have yourself a great week!
