New Apocalypse Sound & Goodfellas DVD's, Yellow Dog titles & more...
26 Mar 2007

Old business first before we take a look at the latest bootleg releases from the last week...I neglected to mention this in the column last Monday night but Apocalypse Sound's recent ROLLING STONES DVD, "Fade Away", had a defect on the disc that caused it to skip through the last third of the video.  Replacements are in circulation so contact your vendor or if you are in the midst of purchasing, make sure you bring this up and be assured of getting the replacement.   Also, it seems that the Tarantura Labels' robust LED ZEPPELIN 1971 Japanese Tour 13CD Box Set had a setback due to some sort of packaging issue - at least that's the word floating around...an effort to confirm this was the hang up proved unsuccessful.  Another piece of information I just completely forgot to relay last week was regarding a "new" ROLLING STONES release that is available out of Japan called "Keeping It Simple", issued on the White Widow Label and contains the Masonic Temple soundboard from Detroit on July 6, 1978.  What's new this week?...

U2 War On TV Apocalypse Sound DVDJames Brown Fever In The Funkhouse Goodfellas DVDIron Maiden From The Club To The World Goodfellas DVD

New DVD's streeting this week from Apocalypse Sound...U2 "War On TV" features a collection of TV appearances to promote the album, "War", supposedly compiled from all master videos...STING "Sacred Labrynth" pairs up his performance in Milan last December of some Renaissance music plus his appearance at the Rock In  Rio fest last June in Lisbon...THE POLICE "For A Thousand Years...Or More!" brings their reunion set at The Whiskey A Go-Go! in Los Angeles on February 12th, along with the clip of their Grammy appearance on the 11th - plus some vintage shows from The Budokan in Tokyo 1981 and Voorburg, Holland 1979.  From the Goodfellas DVD Label this week...IRON MAIDEN "From The Club To The World" compiles a cross-section of TV appearances that includes The Beat Club 1981 in Bremen, The Dynamo Open Air Music Festival in The Netherlands on June 3, 2000 - plus bonus footage from Rome 1993...JAMES BROWN "Fever In The Funkhouse" brings a lengthy proshot performance from The Olympia in Paris on March 8, 1971 with some bonus clips of James with Sammy Davis Jr. of all people.

The Rolling Stones Welcome To The Jungle The Godfather Records LabelBlue Oyster Cult Live In The West 1975Elvis Presley Takes The First! Scorpio Label

Also coming this week from The Godfather Records Label...THE ROLLING STONES "Welcome To The Jungle" 2CD contains the soundboard recording from Madrid on June 16, 1990 with bonus tracks from The Steel Wheels Tour opener in Philadelphia on August 29, 1989 in super nice trifold cardboard sleeve...GUNS N' ROSES "Self-Destruction Blues" 1CD features a collection of 17 Appetite For Destruction and Lies studio outtakes that of course feature a bunch of cover tunes, etc....the batch also includes a couple of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN titles, "Where The Four Winds Blow" 1CD containing the bands' set from Cleveland on June 3, 1974 and the bonus track of "Kitty's Back" from The Bottom Line in New York on July 14th, 1974..."Broken Dreams & A Reason To Believe" 3CD is the "definitive" Nebraska live collection of 46 songs performed through the years 1984 through 2005 in a beautiful deluxe trifold sleeve and 6-page booklet...on a related note that Paris 1985 proshot/soundboard DVD video of BRUCE & THE E STREET BAND is causing quite a ripple of excitement amongst the SPRINGSTEEN collecting community, being called a "must have" to a "holy grail"...my download is almost complete and I look forward to soaking that one up!...staying in this family of labels before I move on, from the Moschino Label this week comes the U2 2CD set, "Dutch Stations" compiles every song performed in Holland during the Zooropa Tour 1993...the set contains the complete performance from Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam on May 11th, 1993 and is supplemented with tracks from the other Rotterdam shows on May 9th & 10th, and Nijmegan on August 3rd.

Bob Dylan Looking For The Savior Hollow Horn LabelBob Dylan Looking For The Savior Back Cover Hollow Horn Label

Hollow Horn's Volume 7, the last installment of their BOB DYLAN Performing Artist Series, is just getting out to distribution channels as I type...the 2CD set is called "Looking For The Saviour" and assembles stereo soundboard fragments/highlights from his 1966 Tours of Australia and the UK - the set also includes the deluxe booklet full of liner notes for the entire 14CD set that has been issued over the course of 2006 and first quarter 2007.  Did somebody ask for more cowbell?...Look for the BLUE OYSTER CULT 2CD set, "Live In The West 1975" to be in circulation shortly...the Euro boot compiles soundboard fragments from stops in Washington State, Oregon and California circa 1975 and is actually pre-Fear The Reaper or a couple of years prior to the cowbell heard 'round the world.  Scorpio continues to offer up some different titles, their latest CD to street soon is the ELVIS PRESLEY single disc, "Takes The First!", which looks to be a compilation of performances from 1956-1969.

The Beatles Shea! Yellow Dog LabelJohn Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band It's Gonna Be Alright Yellow Dog Label

A couple of releases from Yellow Dog surfaced this month... THE BEATLES "Shea!" brings a comprehensive audio document of the famous gig from New York on August 15, 1965...the first disc features the soundboard or "line-feed" of The Beatles set, plus opening acts: KING CURTIS, DISCOTECH DANCERS, CANNIBAL & THE HEADHUNTERS & BRENDA HOLLOWAY..disc two continues with the soundboard recording and opening act Sound Inc., plus the complete BBC 1966 soundtrack of the event along with recordings of fans' descriptions from Shea Stadium on the night of the event.  Also new from Yellow Dog is JOHN LENNON & THE PLASTIC ONO BAND 2CD "It's Gonna Be Alright" which contains studio session outtakes circa 1970 with the evolution of several tracks that include "Mother", "Hold On" & "Love" - primarily.  Both releases come in Hardback Cover deluxe packaging shown above.  In other things Fab...the All Green DVD Label has just issued a batch of titles that include:..."Los Beatles Live" features proshot and news footage from England, Spain and France 1965, "Die Beatles In Germany" is a compilation of 1965 German Tour footage, "Eight Arms To Hold You" pairs the 1965 Blackpool Night Out show along with the August 14, 1965 Ed Sullivan Show appearance footage..."The Beatles Take Over Holland" is a 1964 compilation of newsreel and proshot video, "Fish & Chips" is a seemingly short disc of 1966 BBC Tonight footage of the band filming clips for "I Feel Fine", "Nowhere Man", "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out"...another title without any information on its' contents is "The Beatles By The Bushel".

In closing this week I would like to thank all those members who contributed to all the release discussion in last weeks' column.  Great banter and another measure of just how much passion this collecting bug taps out of us.  It is for that reason I would like to showcase the March releases being presented to interested collectors from the Japanese Footstomp DVD Label...these are all DVD-R titles but displays the varied array of artists and great material available on the circuit.  I'm not advocating that all of these 'deserve' the silver disc treatment but I do think a few cherry-picked choices could do well.  In any case I tip the hat for the label making these vintage performances available and hope that they are finding a market for some of the niche and more mainstream titles - but all interesting.  See the list below.  Have yourself a great week and we'll do it again next Monday..'til then keep your browser aimed at the HotWacks On-line News Ticker...
