Both this title and The Paris Concerts 1964-1966 were released by MBE back in 2001, and re-released last year in a limited edition with bonus DVD footage.  And just like many releases by these people, Beatles In Germany 1966 collects every piece of audio and video tape available to be a very comprehensive set.  This one documents The Beatles' short three date tour in Germany in June of that year,  their final appearances in the country where they honed their skills several years before. 

The bulk of the first disc is the soundtrack to their appearance on German television.  This was a live broadcast from the Circus Krone in Munich on June 24th and MBE have chosen to include the entire show including opening acts.  Cliff Bennet & The Rebel Rousers are okay.  The set by The Rattles is very interesting since it's the first time I've seen anything by "the German Beatles" as they were called.  It's great to discover something and to see and hear this band at the height of their career is a treat.  (This is right before the release of their Hard Day's Night film called  Hurra, die Rattles kommen).  Peter & Gordon, another Brian Epstein act are forgettable, but The Beatles are great on this night.  They were determined to blow the other acts off of the stage and play a fantastic show and they do deliver.  The only problem is the set isn't complete.  The first notes to "She's A Woman" are audible but then the tape cuts back in with "Baby's In Black".   "If I Needed Someone", "Day Tripper", "I Wanna Be Your Man", and "Paperback Writer" are all still missing from the tape, but the sound quality is great.  

The balance of disc one is filled with interviews and radio reports where we can hear them being asked very inane questions like asking Paul when he's planning on getting married.  The second disc contains the entire poor audience source for the Essen show on June 25th.  The second disc contains more interesting press conferences and radio reports and George making a thank you speach for the award from Bravo magazine in German no less.  All of this, except for the Essen tape, is in very good to excellent quality.

The video on the bonus DVD is in excellent quality from very close to the master tape in the ZDT archives.  The performance is identical to the audio found on the first disc and is great to see the band right before they abandoned live performances forever.  The documentary is a good compendium of their fast tour with good (but incomplete) footage from the other concerts on the tour along with shots of the fans on the street, press conferences and airport shots.  Again all in excellent qualilty and another great release on the MBE label.
