REVIEW:

The first of a superbly packaged trilogy from Silent Sea.

These were certainly nice ideas for the producers of this compilation but this is probably the one that crosses further over that "grey area" between bootleg to a pirate more than the others.   I'm not sure the mono print element is enough to sway those who would scrutinize this effort at being a compilation of unofficially packaged material.  The reason is, "A Hard Day's Night" is obviously available in stereo on both VHS and DVD yet, and on a widescale basis.  Here's the kicker, so is the featurette on Side B, "You Can't Do That" The Making of A Hard Day's Night"

It appears that this version of "You Can't Do That..." was taped from the TV Special that first aired on the Arts & Entertainment Cable Channel back in 1999 or whatever it was.  So, the disclaimer here would be that it is simply the broadcast version in very good quality but certainly not the caliber of what is available on home video.  To back up, this is the documentary "making of" that is hosted by Phil Collins.  Collins was actually an "extra" in The Beatles first film, as a young teen.  So we get his  first-hand narration of all the key players, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and then the little nugget producers of this feature introduced, the outtake from the film of the band peforming "You Can't Do That" with many cutaways to the crowd, scenes from the movie and such.  A very nice documentary on this important first rock and roll movie.

The Bonus Material is really just that, extra "stuff".  The newsreel and silent footage is cool but it just seems like footage you've seen time and time again.  The "I'll Cry Instead" piece is actually a promo video that was officially produced by Capitol Records but I'm not certain of the date of release though it appears to be a 90's type of production - perhaps for one of the early anthology pieces or something.  Collectors feel free to chime in here!

Having stated all the above, I find the set incredibly collectible!  The triple foldout high-quality DVD digipack case is absolutely tops.  The inner panels are printed with an overview of the filming of the movie, all layed-out in the most professional manner.  Truly admirable work here.  The production is mastered on a DVD10 dual-sided disc which is awfully convenient for collectors and works wonderfully for these kinds of projects.

All the grey-area aspects considered, I really have to say that these titles are going to be something collectors will snap up once they get a look at them.  They are assembled in the highest of quality and Silent Sea is certainly known for putting the right touches on their product.
