REVIEW:

This release presents a concert that was already released on cdr as Dallas 68(Thumb's Up) and on a silver disc as Tour De Force (Scorpio); this time around this release from a no label presents both sets again on a silver disc.

The Jeff Beck Group was certainly one of the most powerful bands in the late Sixties to hit America with countless of tours (some having just 3 dates!) but in spite of the leader continuous change of mood they were a great combo to watch with Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on bass and Mickey Waller on drums flanking Jeff Beck's virtuosity on guitar. This surprising clean recording comes from their stop at a Dallas bar called LuAnne's in the middle of July '68 and features two sets with complete different songs. The audience is so calm that Jeff Beck has to say over the microphone "It's like a library in here!" in order to get some people clapping along. Both sets have highlights starting with "You Shook Me", the W.Dixon anthem that will be covered by Led Zeppelin too, on the 1st set and then "Can't Hold Out" from the Elmore James catalogue . Then comes a BB King song "Sweet Little Angel" that shows the man's taste on slow blues with the set ending with the day s hit single "Hi Ho Silver Lining". The 2nd set starts with "Beck's Bolero" that features a shy Rod Stewart on rhythm guitar before a tight version of "Oh Pretty Woman" (covered by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers too). "(Mother's Old) Rice Pudding" is played here live for the very first time,a good 6 months before it is official appearance on album. The blues that follows is a cover of the Elmore James song "The Sun Is Shining" that sports a great guitar solo for the end of the 6.50 minutes the song lasts. The last song is announced as "I Am Not Superstitious" and shows the funkiest face of Jeff Beck's playing that will be part of his showcase in the middle 70s stretch of albums. Overall a very enjoyable double concert included in this silver cd just issued in Japan, that shows the usual excellence of Jeck Beck's guitar together with a solid rhythm section with Ron Wood thumping bass and Rod Stewart abrasive vocals that were a great counterpart to the boss solos.
