REVIEW:

Together with Blood,Sweat and Tears, Ten Years After and Jethro Tull the Jeff Beck Group was one of the best draws of the 16th edition of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969 introduced as: an evening of Jazz-Rock; this was the first and last time that the Festival was opened to rock groups. Too many fans invaded the site forcing the cancellation of already scheduled appearances of Led Zeppelin the following Sunday and even the first US gig for Blind Faith.

The Jeff Beck Group concert in Newport was released on Return to Newport that featured also some tracks from the BBC and on Two Festivals 1969 that included Pop at Laurel Festival. The Jeff Beck Group set lasted just over 37 minutes and showed a band rapidly progressing towards a frenetic hard rock with some jazz influences, had they stayed together and played Woodstock music history would have changed. The set is well recorded in stereo with a stronger right side, the only complaint could be because the taper starts messing with the tape after "Shapes Of Things" and so we hear a lot of unwanted noise even through "Jeff's Boogie". Anyway this release supplements the overview of the Newport 69 Festival by adding Ten Years After performance,or part of it (missing "Spoonful" and "Going Home"). After as long introduction where the MC pleads the audience to behave and magnifies the local Police, the Ten Years After set starts with "I May Be Wrong, But I Won t Be Wrong Always" a fast boogie that unfortunately suffers from too much hiss as one channel comes and goes. After a fiery version of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" played with raw energy the slow magnetic tune "Help Me" follows with great outbursts from Alvin Lee guitar coupled with powerful vocals that manage to create huge tension. This is a peculiar release with two great axe masters that played side by side in Newport 69 showing their own great talent and despite a not too impressive sound it allows an historical concert to be spread around over 40 years after it happened.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
