REVIEW:

This release presents the recording of a concert previously unavailable and therefore it is strange that it comes in cdr format and not on a silver disc as this source is from a 1st generation tape that would have deserved it; the Schaefer Music Festival, sponsored by Schaefer Brewing Co., was held in New York Central Park on Monday, July 14th 1969 and featured the Jeff Beck Group supported by Orpheus in two concerts played at 7 and 9.30 pm. Before this concert Wood, Stewart and Newman felt being just part of a support band for Jeff Beck and demanded to be paid in advance, receiving a considerable amount of cash.   This recording is a good one with all instruments featured and although in mono offers a good representation of the band on its 5th US Tour, just a couple of weeks after the album Beck Ola/Cosa Nostra came out and features three songs from it: "All Shook Up", "The Hangman's Knee" and "Rice Pudding". The version of "The Sun Is Shining" presents a fantastic number of blues solos by Beck on his guitar: this song is the Elmore James cover (there are many songs called this way, all different) and is probably the highlight of the set. It was believed that during this occasion Jeff Beck played the Star Spangled Banner on his guitar during one of his two sets, thus anticipating Hendrix at Woodstock by two weeks and in fact it is possible to hear snippets of it during "Shapes Of Things" which is the finale of the show. It is unknown if this is the first or second set but is however remarkable that such an historic performance has seen the light of day after more than 40 years: The day before at Flushing Meadows Park in another concert the Jeff Beck Group jammed with 3/4th of Led Zeppelin, Rick Lee from Ten Years After and Carmine Appice but unfortunately no recording of that gig seems to exist but there is still hope for it as for any other show thought lost then!
