REVIEW:
Street Rats makes a compelling argument for the Clash as one of the most diverse bands since, well, since the Beatles. This collection spans their entire career and includes alternate takes, demos, and live versions. What hits you listening to this sprawling CD is just that: it sprawls. The Clash are all over the place stylistically: the band that seems to barely contain their scorn in a version of "White Man of Hammersmith Palais" (even their run-through of "Louie Louie" is drained of fun, replaced instead by a sort of paranoid drunken fantasy) emerges as the syncopated monster during a live stab at "Washington Bullets." This is nice overview for Clash fans and newcomers. It begs the question: "what is punk?" and it answers it using everything Joe and company had at their disposal.
