REVIEW:

This release and it's sister title from the 5th of June, actually surfaced last Spring from Aurora Borealis.  We wanted to catch up on their releases and have just obtained them.  And we're glad we did!  This is a beautiful sounding show, an excellent performance, and thoughtful packaging and liner notes to accompany the 2 pressed discs.

This recording catches the band in the middle of a six-night stand at The Fillmore East. (The tray art has an arial photo of the crowd outside the venue as tickets for the shows went on sale!...very nice.) These shows spawned the official live double-LP "4- Way Street".  I cannot confirm which, if any, of the material from this show was included.  Although, "On The Way Home" sounds pretty close to the "4-Way" version.

The sound on this release is a bit cleaner and more natural sounding than Wild Wolf's "Read The Airplane"...a title that comes from some banter going on between the band and the front rows of the crowd, and a comment made by David Crosby. It has been rumored that Wild Wolf actually copied this particular set from Aurora Borealis, which would explain the slightly better tone throughout here.

From here, I am going to inject the comment from member, Jack Diamond, as he provides us with some very nice details and insights on the recording and performance (in reference to the Wild Wolf version)..........The sound quality is the best I've ever heard for a prime era CSN&Y show. A fantastic show (for the most part) in excellent stereo soundboard quality. There are some very out of tune guitars on both the acoustic and electric sets (especially electric - just check out "Southern Man" for a sample) and the guys spend an inordinate amount of time tuning up, many times to no avail. Nash can even be heard saying that "it's getting pretty hairy out there" after the above mentioned song. On most of the acoustic songs, the vocals harmonies are simple stellar, really beautiful. David Crosby's voice is an absolute wonder on this cd. Things do not go as well vocally on the louder, electric material. I'm not sure the guys can hear themselves properly. Of course trying to sing in tune with Neil Young is a challenge on any day, and on songs where he sings lead (again, "Southern Man" for example) he's all over the place and CSN have a real challenge on their hands trying to harmonize with him. The set is full of hits, new songs (for 1970), and lesser known cuts. All four are featured both in solo performance and in group situations. There is lots of in between song banter, both to the audience and with each other. Some are very funny and most are interesting to hear.

As I've mentioned, the sound quality on this Original Master Series is slightly clearer and mastered a bit cleaner, providing a natural sound to this stellar soundboard tape.  Simply put, a great title!
