REVIEW:

This recently issued release from Rattlesnake Records presents a newly found version of Bob Dylan and band rehearsals for his 1984 European Tour, held in Beverly Hills, California over a period of 5 days in late May 1984. Said to come from a new torrent, these recordings already came out on vinyl as A Rare Batch of Recordings Vol.1 and then as a double set called Majestic Bells of Bolts issued in Italy in 1987 and then on Dress Rehearsals from TAKRL and on Underdog Soldier (Mighty White Prod.)in 1988. On compact Dirty Lies from Wanted Man came out in 1994, same as Almost Done. The sound is very good in stereo and with no hiss (until "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat") proving this to be a first generation recording, however there are 6 additional songs here from the vinyl counterpart. There is no loss of time between songs, supposedly studio dialogue has been cut out and probably that fact allows the idea of a rushed out and disinterested Dylan, however the point of the rehearsals is to get the band to musically know better the tunes and increase knowledge of the arrangements, so the vocals are just intended as a guide to this process and are not that important in that respect, so probably this is the reason the singer doesn't seem too committed at times. It does have also some songs that were never played during the tour, like the one that gives its title to this release also known as "Almost Done”"that was presented in different versions on Dirty Lies CD. It would be interesting to hear a first generation source of this material, possibly with studio dialogue that seems to have been edited out from this torrent sourced work (contrary to what the booklet says).

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
