REVIEW:

The Gothenburg 1984 Bob Dylan show was certainly one of the best concerts of the tour. This recording by Thinman gives it a proper exposure with a fantastic audience tape that presents it in the best possible light. Each instrument is clear, including Dylan's vocals, and the audience is not obtrusive at any point. The recording gets better in the middle of  "I And I" when Greg Sutton's bass becomes more evident. This show came out on vinyl as Extra (3LP red vinyl) and then Don't Think Twice and as Gothenburg 84 (5 sided 3LP) just two months after the show. On CD it was released as a copy of the latter title only, so this release proves to be of good use also because of its quality. Dylan's performance is pretty good, high standards also for the band with an eclectic Taylor that is capable of accompanying the melodies without insisting too much on electric solos, but can as a matter of fact inspire when lets loose his vibrato; a plastic rhythm section sparkles in the electric songs with Ian McLagan keyboards underlining his part. The acoustic songs have two moments in this concert, at the end of both discs, the first as part of the planned change of scene and the second is the first encores to be extended in accordance with audience reactions: in this case two songs since "Blowin In The Wind" is electric when the whole band rejoins Dylan to perform the last four, a nice performance much better than the official document of the tour, Real Live.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
