REVIEW:

This new box set presents the most extensive selection of live tracks from the Dylan 1984 Tour as soundboards, featuring Mick Taylor, Mark Knopfler, Santana, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison.

Most of these tracks have been previously available: The Dave Letterman show tracks on TV Guide or Live, the Los Angeles Tour Rehearsals tracks came out as Majestic Bells of Bolts, Dress Rehaersals and Underdog Soldier on vinyl and last year on Angel of Rain cd while the Verona Rehearsals were released on Dirty Lies cd. Concerning the live stuff: Munich concert was released on vinyl as Forever Young-The Return of Great White Wonder 3lps and as picture discs on The Munich Tapes while on cd as Jokerman Has Left the Stadium, various other Euro dates tracks can be found on From the Mountains of Madrid while Madrid 84 featured just the Spanish gig. The Brussels show came out as Standing on the Waters and Still Walking Towards The Sun, while the Swedish dates came out as Extra, and Gothenburg 84 on vinyl and as Don't Think Twice and on A Dying Voice Within Me on cd; the Cologne concert came out as Drunken Farmerboy and Velvet Dylan on vinyl and Berlin concert appeared on Just the Girls and Jokerman Plays Berlin; Vienna show as Jokerman In Europe. The Italian stops in Rome came out as Live at Palaeur and On The Streets Of Rome (misspelled Oh) and Rome Revisited. Another Spain concert was released on vinyl as Barcelona (Swingin Pig) and Spanish Boots, as From the Coast of Barcelona on cd and also on TV Guide while the Paris concert on Les Temps Changent, Over The Broken Glass and Paris Par Excellence. Finally Newcastle July 5th 1984 (Golden Masters) was the title of the concert held there and What s Real? is the name of the release from Wembley, London concert. Obviously it must be mentioned the official live album Real Live taken from this tour. This set is a very nice collection of songs recorded in beautiful stereo, Disc one starts with the Dave Letterman show that saw Dylan backed by Justin Poskin and Justin Jeskins (J.J.Holliday) on guitar, Tony Marsico on bass and Chalo Quintana on drums. Then come the nice rehearsal tracks from Los Angeles March 84 sessions with Taylor guitar adding his trademark solo licks that can be better appreciated in this context rather than in a live occasion. Same can be told of the Verona, Euro 84 tour rehearsals that are however more loose with lots of dead air between takes of songs. Missing is Offenbach from which concert 3 tracks were broadcasted on radio. The live songs from Verona are pristine and great sounding while the Hamburg stuff starts with the end of "Like A Rolling Stone" and a sound that suffers it seems more from bad mastering than from its source, same happens for Track 5, "Blowin In The Wind"; "Tombstone Blues" that follows lasts 0.26 seconds and then it is all silence through the end (!). It is quite certain that the maker does not listen to the stuff before pressing it onto disc, what a shame! Luckily the rest of the disc sounds good. The two tracks that are at the beginning of Disc 5 are said to come both from Vienna but they are night and day as far as sound output, the second one being much clearer. A sore throated Dylan sings most of his set list from Rome first concert for the remaining part of this Disc and first 5 songs of Disc 7 that present so the complete performance that ends with an electric version of "Blowin In The Wind", same for the remaining songs from Barcelona that are truly excellent sounding. Disc 8 presents the Paris concert which is almost complete missing just the first 3 songs, as per its quality it is a bit muddy sounding. Here there are guests as Hughes Aufrey that sings French verses of "The Times They are A Changing" hence the French title for the boot Les Temps Changent, and then Van Morrison on "It's All Over Now,Baby Blue" while this show has the bonus of "Knocking On Heaven's Door" as final encore. On the London show that is also available on the accompanying DVD there is "Senor" a rarely played song on stage in this tour. The last concert of the tour is here presented in full except for the first three songs, it is Slane Castle near Dublin and features again Van Morrison on "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" and "Tupelo Honey" and Bono on "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat" and everybody in a messed up version of "Blowin in The Wind".

The accompanying DVD starts with Dylan being interviewed by Martha Quinn, the MTV video dj that adds make up to Dylan, backstage in Wembley, being filmed by the MTV camera man without Dylan knowing it and the interviewer that realizes that 6 minutes into it. This is an open hearted interview with Dylan off guard that speaks of a number of different topics and ends just 4 minutes before going on stage: the camera man actually follows Dylan walking to the stage and the Wembley concert kicks on: it is shot by the same guy that was previously shooting the interview and despite Bill Graham shouts to get off he continues to roll the camera, interesting view but poor audio. From "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat" Eric Clapton comes on stage soon followed by Chrissie Hynde; next is Van Morrison to show up while from "Tombstone Blues" is Carlos Santana to fatten up the menu, the footage ending midway "Blowin In The Wind". Despite the problems on Disc 4 this is a nice collection and with a little more care could have become a memorable release.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
