REVIEW:

Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert was heavily celebrated with a marathon concert held at New York Madison Square Gardens and we may wonder what will happen in a couple of years when there will be the 50th Anniversary! Anyway this Euro release in the same trend of some recent Stones products presents an interesting and most complete report of that event spread in 4 DVDs.

The first disc presents Rehearsals that feature Dylan flanked by Roger McGuinn, Booker T & MGs, GE Smith, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty,George Harrison and Neil Young. There are many talks between musicians and GE Smith trying to lead the 9 guitarists on stage within a certain order. The audio mix is not that great as we hardly hear the vocals buried under the instruments, but it still a nice experience to eyewitness all these legends together chatting and exchanging licks. After some songs it is Neil Young s turn to play a couple of electric versions of "All Along The Watchtower" with GE Smith, Alan Dunn, Steve Cropper and Booker T. But on this first disc there is also some Interviews (Sinead O’Connor, Clapton, Levon Helm, Roger McGuinn and Tracy Chapman) some fragments of a 65 Dylan Press Conference, a short clip of "Tangled Up In Blue" and on the Extras section a Behind the Scenes with more interviews including a short one with Ron Wood. The second disc starts with the non broadcast show featuring Booker T.& MGs, GE Smith and John Hammond: these are taken from a VHS tape and not comparable in clarity with other songs, but still great to have for completists. After about 24 minutes than the real event starts and we get John Mellencamp, George Thorogood and Lou Reed. Then it s Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder with Mike McCreedy followed by Tracy Chapman and then the family duet of June Carter and Johnny Cash; last performers of this disc are Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.

Disc Three starts with rocking Johnny Winter s slide guitar rendition of   “Highway 61 Revisited”and then Ronnie Wood on “Seven Days”, followed by acoustic guitar player Ritchie Havens performing “Just Like A Woman”. It is the powerful set of the Clancy Brothers that knew Dylan from the Village early 60s to come after and perform “When The Ship Comes In”, followed by a lunatic Sinead O’Connor that shouts the lyrics of “War”. Neil Young is after with his version of “Just Like Tom Thumb s Blues” and ”All Along The Watchtower”.   Sexy Pretenders vocalist Chrissie Hynde sings “I Shall Be Released” allowing a guitar solo to GE Smith while in the middle of background vocalists we can spot a fancy looking Sheryl Crow. Introduced by Ron Wood is then Eric Clapton that plays a version close to the original of “Love Minus Zero/No Limits” and a bluesy “It s Alright Ma”. The disc ends with a great performance by the O’Jays and a funny one by the Band (minus Robbie Robertson but with another guitarist and another accordion player beside Garth Hudson replacing him) that play “When I Paint My Masterpiece”.

The last disc presents the heavy weights starting with George Harrison, Tom Petty & The Heattbreakers and Roger Mc Guinn, before the Song and Dance Man himself hits the stage. Dylan plays two acoustic songs and then many friends come on stage for “My Back Pages” and then the grande finale with everyone on stage for “Knocking On Heaven s Door”. Nowhere to be seens are Mick Taylor (may have been on tour in the Far East), Robbie Robertson and Van Morrison (that usually have been present on stage with Dylan many times). At the end of this mammoth version Dylan is left on stage to play again on acoustic guitar “Girl From The North Country”. The set ends with a bonus version of “My Back Pages” that has the audio overdubbed from the officially released cds. This is an enjoyable set which should please fans without a doubt.
