REVIEW:

The Faces BBC recordings have been the subject of many underground releases as well as of few official ones (4 Discs Five Guys Walk Into a Bar that came out in June 2004 and 5 Discs You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything that came out in August 2015) however a comprehensive set is still missing and this one is the closest you can get, offering the best broadcasts from 1970-1973 in what has been marketed by the label itself as an high resolution remastering job. In fact the songs are pristine recordings, maybe from the original BBC transcription discs and few from tapes or vinyl boots; what strikes in these BBC recordings is the extreme instruments separation, usually Ron Wood s guitar is on the left channel with Ian McLagan keyboards on the right one. The first 6 songs on Disc One come from Top Gear 1970 , the 4 from March are in excellent sound, Wicked Messenger being introduced by Brian Matthews; the other 2 from September of the same year are equally excellent, while the rest of the Disc features the Concert held at the Paris Theatre in London, a venue the Faces will use a lot for live BBC recordings, in mid May 1971, a concert hosted by John Peel.

Disc Two has the first 4 songs that I believe come from a concert held at the Paris Theatre on February 72, other tracks from this show are (in better quality, maybe from a re-broadcast) the final 4 songs on this disc as well as the first one on Disc Three, they could have been grouped together forming an almost complete recording of the broadcasted concert; in fact the two versions of Miss Judy s Farm are the same.

Disc Three is split between another show from the Paris Theatre in London this time for television called Sounds for Saturday-The Music of the Faces which was recorded in late October 71 but broadcasted in April 72 and a bunch of outtakes from Ooh La La, some of which officially released on the above mentioned 5 discs set (Silicone Grown, Glad & Sorry) and some even officially issued on the soundtrack for Mahoney s Last Stand (Flags and Banners instrumental under the title C&W Number, My Fault, Just Another Honky under the title Safety Pin Queen), so the only underground track in here is the instrumental version of Ooh La La.

Disc Four presents the full concert held at the Paris Theatre on February 8 th 1973, but never broadcasted by the BBC because the band was sounding too drunk, until January 2003 when it finally was aired on BBC6 Music, allegedly by mistake.

Packaging is good with as nice front cover and booklet, unfortunately the back cover (and booklet) track listing is badly printed and tracks are hard to read, let alone some incorrectly dated; even given timing are not correct. Apart from that, this is a great sounding collection which helps collectors but also fans of 70s UK rock to enjoy such raw but charming sounds.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
