REVIEW:
The core material from Stockholm, January 9, 1969 is black & white footage pro-shot from stage right using 2 cameras. A portion of this footage was included on the official DVD release "Experience Jimi Hendrix". On the official release, 2 tracks; Red House and Sunshine Of Your Love are featured. Here we have the entire show which is fun at times, boring at others…IF, Jimi Hendrix can be boring. It would seem that the best of the performance was included on the official offering. This is where Jimi uses a white Gibson SG, which is kind of rare considering the axe of choice was usually the flipped custom Fender Stratocaster. It just seemed like this was an off night and the band seem a bit miffed as they exit the stage. Even the MC is a bit confused when they don't return for an encore. The video is maybe a generation higher than the master used on the official release. Th! e audio is very good stereo for the age but does get muddy and one-dimensional at times. I personally enjoyed the London '67 material the most. The video is only slightly grainy and we get the Jimi Hendrix Experience in their early 'fro period, sporting the best in 60's regalia. Watching this performance made it clear where Prince "borrowed" many of his moves. Jimi is on fire and the London crowd is eating it up. This is wonderful color footage of the band in their prime though the audio has got that AM Radio tonality, the guitar and vocals are very clear. It is fun to see Jimi perform "Sgt. Pepper's". You can see why Paul McCartney was blown away when he saw Jimi do this a mere 48 hours upon the release of the album about 3 weeks earlier. Classic. Rounding out the set is a 10-minute plus segment from the German Beat Club. This is very low generation color TV footage and offers nice stereo audio. The initial 2 songs kind of go over the audience heads but, "Purple Haze" ignites the ! studio and a passionate performance is turned in from the band. This is a nice compilation that is pieced together thoughtfully. There is not much more you can ask for with this old material, unless you can obtain master soundboard audio to synch with the video. The only thing that struck me odd was the "rapid-fire" photo assault at the beginning. There are some great pix in there and you cannot really enjoy them with this effect. But that is knit picking

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
