REVIEW:

This newly released 4 cds set presents Jagger’s first two dates in Tokyo in late March 1988 during his first solo tour. The recordings are done very professionally with no songs cut and angle of recording changed at all so we do get the same feel for the performance since the tapes kept his seat and din t move along during the concert: due to the venue and time this is remarkable since it is the first ever performance of one of the Stones in Japan (the band first concerts will happen in 1990) a land that always wanted to see them live in the 60s and 70s but could not. The way to determine the type of music we hear from this recordings pertains to which field one will support: if you are on a Jagger side you consider the whole experience as an experiment he had/wanted to do in order to determine his solo appeal to a crowd without the band umbrella to cover or shelter; if you are on a Keith side you will regret the heavy Stones influence that permeates this set list and therefore it may seem like a cover band supporting an artist. Anyway from the musical standpoint some Stones covers are worthwhile ("Gimme Shelter","Harlem Shuffle" heard live here before the Stones used it) some are lifeless exercises ("Honky Tonk Women" that opens the show has 1.38 minutes of the first two chords!)   but Jagger solo songs are the ones that need to be highlighted since they will be heard live just during the Australasian 1988 tour. The first concert lacks some bass and probably has been enhanced somehow in order to get a lesser metallic output while the second has a fuller sound. Recordings from the first Tokyo night was released as MJ in Tokyo Dome, Tokyo Shuffle (Golden Stars), Only a Break? (Crazy Mama), Stage Flight (Dr.Gig), Deep Down Under (Contra Band Rec.) and recently Eat The Big Egg 1988 (IMP)3 cds set that featured also the Soundboard portion off the video of the first show also available on DVD as Live in Japan 1988 (High Numbers) and From Osaka to Tokyo (Jointrip) while for the second night we only had vol.4 of the Far East collection on cdr so far but two tracks only were released on Tokyo Shuffle ("Brown Sugar" and "It's Only Rock n Roll") because Tina Turner came on stage to guest on them. This no label release continues the great output that has come out from last year and even if there is no name all releases seems to have the same disc labels and covers design so we can think of them as coming from the same company.
