REVIEW:

We just reviewed awhile ago Mick Jagger 4 discs Guest of Honour and here comes WLR release in 9 discs whose intent is again to highlight Jagger's solo career as well as his collaborations with other artists. It is split over 9 discs and presents many hard to find tracks that only collector have pursued over the years together with other ones easily accessible. Disc One starts with the Andrew Oldham Orchestra cover of the Ronettes, followed by two songs with Eric Clapton, the obvious soundtrack tunes of Performance and Ned Kelly and the great blues from Jamming With Edward with Nicky Hopkins "It Hurst Me Too" where Jagger uses some Dylan lyrics from "Pledging My Time".  We are rapidly into the 70s with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", Ron Wood 's "Can't You Feel The Fire" from his second album. The tracks from the Los Angeles Country Club are generally thought not to be with Jagger's voice, taken from Through the Years Swinging Pig cd, contrary to the Sydney Rehearsals which appeared on the famous Brothers of Sodom 6 cds from Empress Valley. The version of "Memory Motel" that closes this disc comes from a Japanese laser disc from Dave Stewart soundtrack from Beyond the Groove film. Disc Four opens with a live guest of Jagger on a Lenny Kravitz version of "No Expectations" followed by a version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" that was released in 1993 on the second cd pressing of the Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra Under The Direction of Keith Richards in 1999. After another bunch of solo songs off Wandering Spirit we also get a soundboard song from the 1992 A Celebration Of The Blues with Gary Moore and Otish Rush and a couple of tracks were he sang backing vocals to his brother Chris. The disc ends with the "Shine A Light" outtake from Leon Russell 24K gold cd issued in January 1994 and an orchestral version of "Angie" with the London Symphony Orchestra also from the same year. Disc Five features more guest appearances staring with the Alfie Soundtrack written with Dave Stewart followed by a track from the Red Devils covering Little Walter "You d Better Watch Yourself" here called "I Got My Eyes On You"  in great soundboard quality. After comes a song from Jimmy Rip solo album before another duet with brother Chris and the soundtrack from the film Bent, then three blues songs from Jimmy Rogers album. One song from John Phillips Pay Pack & Follow album and the rest of the disc holds tracks from Goddess In The Doorway, same as Disc Six that also features the 1 minute mystery track at the end of the album. Then we get probably the best guest spot Jagger has done in years backing Peter Wolf on "Nothing But The Wheel" written by John Sherrill. After that some more songs from Alfie Soundtrack, the last two songs coming from a Blues Festival held on Mustique Island in 2005 and a cover of "Evening Gown" from the latest Jerry Lee Lewis album. Disc Seven has a bunch of extended and instrumental versions mostly found on 12 inches vinyl platters and for recent tracks on cd as well. Disc Eight is supposed to present some scattered tracks staring with the Live Aid 1985 performance with Tina Turner, the most recent guest spot for brother Chris, one version of "Charmed Life" (there have been two different promo cds issued in 2007 with 10 and 5 different versions of this song), the official track from the Red Devils sessions issued on The Best of M.Jagger and finally the official track from the Boogie 4 Stu album where all of the Stones including Wyman played; had WLR waited a few weeks even Jagger s latest venture with Superheavy group could have been added by downloading "Miracle Worker". Unfortunately it is not the case since the disc although sporting a Jagger picture is actually Elvis Presley live, another serious mistake from this label that will infuriate fans and collectors. Disc Nine is actually the sessions with the Red Devils, unfortunately not the best quality, they could have copied Sister Morphine release (Blues Sessions) that sounds pretty good. So this could have been a nice work but unfortunately the serious mistake with Disc Eight will prevent any positive judgement. At this time it is not known if a replacement disc will come, though it is rumoured.

PS: the label has issued a reprint of Disc 8. It is anyhow a little effort since the disc length is barely over 25 minutes of music featuring the 1985 Live Aid songs, another more recent duet with brother Chris , one version of "Charmed Life" and lastly three official releases: hecking "Upon My Baby" and "Too Many Cooks" from The Very Best of M.Jagger and "Watching The River Flow" from the Ian Stewart tribute; this last track featuring all the Stones including Bill Wyman in a virtual reunion.
