REVIEW:
A 1982 Christmas TV Broadcast, produced by BBC-TV for The Old Grey Whistle Test. The source tape utilized is a high-generation videotape so the picture quality isn't stellar but, being it is an actual TV Broadcast it is still quite good. The audio is a mono broadcast so there isn't a lot of punch to enhance the video experience. The producers of this special really botched up the beginning of this show. The program joins the concert at the Hammersmithc Odeon about 2/3rds into the event, right at the tail-end jam of Rocket Man. THEN, we get our BBC-TV host out onstage to welcome the "live" viewing audience to the venue and introduce Elton. This is where the broadcast should have begun, to be effective. Because Bitch Is Back would have really packed a punch for an opening number. It still does but the effect is lost a bit. Multi-camera pro-shot holiday performance with lots of emotion and atmosphere. Too bad we don't have a beefed up audio track to accompany this video, it could be great! Instead it is just OK. The budget production and relatively low cost through Cat's Meow is a big plus for this decent Elton John DVD.
