REVIEW:

This excellent soundboard from Zion was recorded during Journey’s third trip to Japan and their first tour with new member, keyboardist Jonathan Cain. It is said that he was approached about joining during the bands previous tour which was supported by Cain’s band, The Babies.

The band is in top form. Steve Perry sings effortlessly, hitting every note, Neal Schon’s guitar playing is fluent and filled with emotion, and the rhythm section rock solid. Steve Smith delivers a great drum solo, rhythmic throughout while showcasing tons of chops. All songs are played with precision and the background vocals sound full and dynamic.

Gone from the set now are Gregg Rolie’s lead vocal songs and all pre-Steve Perry material. Journey opens with a pair of songs from Departure, with their focus quickly moving on to the new material from their latest release, Escape. “Don’t Stop Believin” is very well received, followed by powerful versions of “Stone In Love” and “Keep On Runnin”. Before “Who’s Crying Now”, they include the instrumental track “When The Love Is Gone”, a song from their 1980 Dream After Dream soundtrack where Neal displays Jeff Beck style melodies. “Turn Around In Tokyo” has Jonathan Cain on lead vocal and was written during his days with The Babies. Appropriate considering they are in Tokyo. Also included during this tour are “Dixie Highway” and “The Party’s Over”, songs only found on their previous live album, Captured.

During the second half on the show, especially during “Dixie Highway” and “Lovin’ You Is Easy”, Neal’s guitar seems to have a tad too much echo on it, creating a blurred effect. This is also the case with the background vocals on “Too Late”, which sound a half of a beat behind.“Wheel In The Sky” is played at a nice tempo, (not too fast as on other tours) and the typical encores “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin” and “Anyway You Want It” close the show.

The first 150 sets also come with a bonus DVDR of the 60 minute Live In Japan Special and is an excellent pro-shot document. It is a multi-camera shoot with a great picture and nice clear close ups. Not as dark as the video copies in circulation although the video does contain the complete show. The level of the DVDR is also much louder than the video and it has a pre show introduction (to the studio version of “Escape”) and runs an ad for the Escape album at the end.

This is a great concert that still includes songs like “La Do Da” “Too Late” and “Lovin You Is Easy” before becoming the hit machine that will leave most of this older material behind. This package comes highly recommended.
