REVIEW:

Packaged together for the first time are the two earliest recordings (in circulation) of a very young Led Zeppelin.  Even though the band had only been together a couple of months they sound like a well seasoned band hungry for success and all that goes along with it.

Beezlebub Records have put these two recordings together in a great looking gatefold package.  They’ve used an early black and white promo picture as the basis for the main cover art.  The center panel artwork is a replication of an early newspaper article about the band.  The back cover art is an early black and white stage shot of the entire band, along with the track listings for both shows.

The first disc contains the earliest circulated recording of Led Zeppelin Live.  Robert comments on how cold it is in Spokane and how the equipment had to be heated up with portable heaters.  Overall the band sounds very tight and it’s great to hear early versions of many of Zep’s trademark in-concert showpieces such as Dazed And Confused and John Bonham’s Drum Solo.  The depth of this recording provides a perfect vehicle in which to get lost in Led Zeppelin.  Beezlebub Records have boosted the overall level of this recording slightly and they have added a bit of low end to bring this recording into the new millennium.

The second disc contains a newly surfaced recording of the band from the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles, CA.  This recording has only been making the rounds for a month or so and in my opinion it is a hot performance.  Beezlebub’s version seems to bring the vocals out a bit more than the other label’s release.   For Your Love rounds out this performance and the band play it as it should have been originally.  It doesn’t get more psychedelic than this version. Even if you’re not a fan of Beezlebub Records you should take a chance on this release.  I, myself am not a fan of the early shows but I did find myself  enjoying the shows contained on this release.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
