04 Summer in Russia is the latest release on the MBE label.  They've been producing excellent quality DVDs of late and this is no exception.  This is the professsionally filmed show in St. Petersberg on the afternoon of June 20th, McCartney's second show in that country.  There were many cameras used including panning shots of the stage and the crowd.  The picture and sound is uniformly excellent.  The only small criticism is the editing is a bit too kinetic, rarely focusing on a picture for more than a couple seconds.  This partly compensates for the band who, with the exception of drummer Abe Laboriel, Jr, don't have much stage presence.   

So many songs are performed and so much happens that this is a massive show.  The pre-show opening includes a man on stilts with back up female dancers shaking to the horn section of "Listen To What The Man Said" until the curtain rises and Paul launches into "Jet".  The concert contains over thirty songs and pushes three hours, all on a sunny day.  The audience sings "Happy Birthday" to Paul after "All My Loving".  "Let Me Roll It" is one of the best live numbers from the Wings era and is excellent here with strong emphasis upon the organ.  Paul even goes into his Jimi Hendrix impression at the end, playing "Foxy Lady". 

"She's A Woman" receives a big ovation since it's one of the most popular Beatles tunes in Russia.  The "Rusty Announced" track listed above is guitarist Rusty Anderson taking a picture of the crowd before "Maybe I'm Amazed".  "In Spite Of All The Danger" is introduced the same as he does at the Bridge School Benefit as an early song, encouraging the crowd to sing along.  "Live & Let Die" has lots of exciting explosions, and the show ends with the expected big Beatle hits for a very massive, excited and enthusastic crowd.      

Several songs from this broadcast will be included on the official Paul McCartney in Red Square DVD set for release on June 14th by A&E video.  The bulk of that release will be the 2003 Red Square show in Moscow but will include "Helter Skelter", "Penny Lane", and "I’ve Got A Feeling" from this concert as extras.  MBE have given us an opportunity to enjoy the show in its entirety and is definitely recommended.
