REVIEW:
Undistinguished songs with no spark whatsoever, "formulaic adult contemporary pap" - these are among the more objective comments reviewers have made over the years regarding Paul McCartney's so-called attempt, on Back To The Egg, to shake things up, rock 'n' roll-wise, following the relatively "soft" stylings of 1978's London Town. From June of that year through the following April, Wings convened to amass a huge trove of tapes which would subsequently yield a number of bootlegs over the years. Here, Yellow Cat has assembled multiple takes of album tracks, all in very good quality despite some obvious generation loss, as evidenced in the somewhat dull-sounding high end department. Included are a number of unreleased (at least officially speaking) tunes, none of which are command performances but are certainly of interest to the collector: Maisie, Day After Rockestra, Time Can Bring You Pain, Superbig Heatwave, Cage. Also present, as indicated by quotation marks in the tracklisting above, are numerous rehearsal/jams that were apparently given tentative titles either by the compilers of this set or by Macca himself. Those, in fact, are the most interesting cuts, since they find Wings at their rawest, most spontaneous, least stylized and, dare I say it, most rockin' - as per the Egg sessions' overall intent. While "Space Jam 1," for example, can be viewed as disjointed in places, but its cool, ramshackle, spaced-out vibe justifies its ad-hoc title. Wings (as McCartney has been known to say about his earlier group, the one from Liverpool) was a good little garage band when it wanted to be. (Caveat: the sleeve only lists 18 songs on Disc 2, but there are 19 indexed, hence the notation "untitled" above.) Included is an eight-page booklet which outlines the general story behind the Egg sessions, but which doesn't discuss each track as specifically or in-depth as one might wish. Yellow Cat #YC077/78
