All Due Respect
features both known tape sources for Pink Floyd’s second night in
Detroit
. Tape A contains the entire performance minus a large chunk of “You’ve Got To Be Crazy” while Tape B, only covers the first half of the show. Tape B is rumored to have been a complete recording but the master was lost or trashed and this is all that exists. Sirene does a nice job completing Tape A by utilizing the missing section of “You’ve Got To Be Crazy” from Tape B.
Nearing the end of the second leg of the North American Tour, Pink Floyd was still delivering exceptional performances. Perhaps this is due to the two American tours being somewhat short, not allowing the band to suffer from burnout. Roger says “O.K. Detroit, don’t worry about a thing” before “Raving And Drooling” setting the pace for the night.
Discs one and two contain Tape A which is a slightly distant but clear audience source that captures the sound well. Gilmour’s guitar is very distant for the first part of the night but gets better as the show continues. One of the drawbacks to the quadraphonic sound system is the variations in the mix depending on where you are and the taper was probably too close to one of the channels. Regardless, the recording still has a nice atmosphere. Audience interference is kept to a minimum although faint conversation can be heard in a few places like during “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts. 1-5”.
The entire first set would feature unfamiliar material including the still unreleased Wish You Were Here tracks. The Dark Side Of The Moon set follows after a short break and sounds inspired. Awesome vocal performances from Vanetta Fields and Carlena Williams make “The Great Gig In The Sky” a highlight tonight as well as a stellar version of “Any Colour You Like”. “Echoes” is the usual encore featuring sax from Dick Parry which unfortunately at the start of his solo is buried in the mix.
Tape B sounds closer to the stage and was recorded in a more central location to the quad system and captures a better balance between instruments. The tape is in good condition except for a flutter in the tape that starts at the end of “Have A Cigar” and continues until a drop out during “Shine On Pts. 6-9” at around the
3:15
mark where the problem finally disappears.
There are better recordings from Pink Floyd’s 1975 North American Tour for general collectors but this is the type of comprehensive release that really satisfies the serious Floyd collector. Both tape sources are worth hearing and the bands performance is good. Another nice job by the Sirene guys who I believe is the first silver label to feature this show.
