REVIEW:

(he takes a deep breath) So, you're lookin' for some pre-grunge L.A. big-hair pop-rock?  Lookin' for an early 90's reminder of just how popular the power ballad was?  Lookin' for your acid washed jeans?  Well, Digital Line has provided all the answers in this slick packaged DVD of Poison at their peak(?).

It's a great looking package with a pristine copy of the show on a pressed silver disc.  Any fans of this era or genre of "Rock" will certainly be satisfied when they get it home.  Great production and Digital Line provided the packaging to befit the contents. This video was skimmed right off the air from an obviously re-broadcast version of this Poison show from VH-1 Classic.  The recording is tops and really all it does -all these years later - is show just how pathetic this band was.  Sorry, but it's true.  Call them a poor man's DLR-era Van Halen, call them the dregs of an industry that couldn't look beyond it's powdered noses, call them whatever you want but it is embarrassing.  Brett Michaels can't catch his breath to attempt to sing (but he does show promise with a harmonica) and C.C. Deville just plays a billion notes per second while stunning you with his amazingly thin feather duster hair.  Rikki Rocket's drums sound like metal garbage cans turned upside down and Bobby Dahl, well...he can play the bass but, my god.

In the end, the power ballad wins.  You still get a stadium of 50,000- plus, happier than shit to sing "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" and "Something To Believe In".  Everyone goes home satisfied.  It's all there on "Swallow This Live!"  The cover art and classic WWF-like intro reference Southern California but Michaels does urge "Irvine" to sing along during the proceedings and though we don't have a solid date for the performance the artwork states 1991, so we've narrowed it down that far.  Clearly, they are at home and the crowd loves every minute. (I think 3 of the boys are from Ohio or Indiana so I'm not sure what the bands' fasicnation with Civil War garb and Confederate Flag are - Skynyrd fans?)

There is no Label reference on the DVD art or disc itself but the Digital Line presentation is there with their other recent offerings and they do provide quality material for the collector.

(...And oh yeah, if Brett Michaels doesn't think he's David Lee Roth then I'm Rod Stewart.)
