REVIEW: |
This vinyl
release presents yet another work dedicated to the soul of the Stones, this
time bringing over his piano demos recorded at Long View Farm in 1981 and at Toronto in 1977, two very
different circumstances where Keith Richards entered the studio. In 1977 he was
in Toronto, just
a week after the El Mocambo club gigs with the Stones while the Long View Farm
visit was his way to test the studio where the Stones would rehearse for their
1981 US Tour. In both circumstances the tunes played presents the melancholic
and soft side of the rocker interpreting classic tunes which seem so distant
from anything he recorded with the Stones to puzzle purists, from Hoagy
Carmichael s Nearness Of You to Glenn Sutton s She Still Comes Around, Merle
Haggard Sing Me Back Home and George Jones Apartment No.9 they cover many of
the deep emotions of a lone player.
The
songs are played by Richards mostly on piano (hence the title of this album)
with elementary
but effective playing and
great vulnerability revealed by the vocals;
they all portray a sense of loneliness and
deep regret which could be coming from his personal life experiences of the
times. This release comes from an unnamed label, there is no trace of a name
even on the disc matrix and, most disturbing, no way to discern Side A to Side
B except listening; anyway these tracks have been bootlegged many times and lots
of collectors have this stuff from Unknown Dreams onwards, so this release
could appeal just to newcomers or die hard collectors. It is pressed on a good
looking orange or white vinyl album wrapped in a jacket with Keith Richards classic
early 80s close up photo on front cover and the famous shot with Pope Declares:
Keith Richards Is God on the back. The album is dedicated to the memory of
Johnny Thunders, Gram Parsons and Nikki Sudden
