REVIEW: |
This
release from Goldplate presents yet another copy from Cpt. Acid s work (shouldn
t the guy sue them?Ha ha) featuring Keith Richards solo sessions recorded on the
same day of his birthday in 1983 when he wed Patti Hansen in Mexico at Cabo
St.Lucas. We hear
Keith Richards strumming
through the night his acoustic guitar thanks to the session been recorded in a
Hotel room, allegedly the same Finisterra Hotel where his wedding happened,
together with a guy named Stroker who provided backing vocals and translating
immediately in Spanish tracks 11 and 14 on Disc 2 ). All this has been recorded
in stereo by a cassette recorder and has surfaced in many release (most of the
times the session is featured in mono due to too much hiss on one channel). At
first on vinyl on a LP called The Honeymoon Tapes (Toast Rec.Browninc 2,002), 2
tracks can be found on High and Lonesome (Anna 1)LP,
then
Peaches Gone South (Coast 2 Coast 005), The Complete Honeymoon Tapes (Hot
Lips
HLR KR 001-2) and with the same
name (SRS Records 001), Sing Me Back Home (OBR 458031) on LP and You Know My
Dreams (OBR
93003) both on LP and cd and
parts on many cds like Learning The Game (Scorpio 92KD 0803); recently 2 cds that
are part of a massive 13 cds box called K.Richards 1967-2007 The Solo Works
(WLR 2144), The Honeymoon Tapes-Key to the Highway 2 (SODD 123-4)
have the same set list that consists of
traditional Country, RnR, Blues classics mixed with the occasional Stones tune.
The SODD release presented the same songs all in stereo this time (lots of hiss
on Disc one at the beginning) offering nothing more than a re packaging of the
whole lot without adding anything new in a double disc subtitled Keith To The
Highway 2. In
late October 2016 Cpt. Acid reworked the original tapes and presented his
version sourced mostly from OBR vinyl rip ( tracks on first disc) and Hot Lips
- The Complete Honeymoon tapes ( second disc
and few tracks placed on the first one ). So
what about this release? It can easily be said it surpasses all other ones in
terms of clarity of sound. From the maker s words:
The most important thing done here was pitch correction. The closest pitch was
on Peaches Gone South (CTS
bootleg ),
but even that one was not completely ok and since the remastering job wasn t
that good, it was too hot that has been reworked as well. Of course some equalization
has been made and level corrections, cleaned some clicks and pops too. The OBR
vinyl rip was a much better source but did not have all of the tracks, while
the Hot Lips bootleg had a muddy sound which has been fixed, but also there was
tape hiss on that one but however no noise reduction was used. So there is
still some hiss on second disc but generally it sound much better than on any
other bootleg with these tracks. It must be noted that tracks order has been
also rearranged according to my taste.
It must be
also said that the packaging is particularly tasty with a nice photo of Keith
embracing his wife.
