REVIEW:

This release was supposed to come out some years ago, but never did whatever the reason; now out of the blue it comes out featuring the album that never was in 2002, because the Stones decided to release Forty Licks with just 4 tracks stemming from the sessions that happened in may-June 2002 at Suresnes, Paris. Included in this compilation are tracks extracted from the Four Flicks DVD (Tracks 1-7) that are obviously parts and incomplete tracks, but they are representative of the same tracks that were created during those sessions; actually, Don’t Go No Farther is a segment retrieved from the Four Flicks DVD also known as You Better Leave That Man Alone. Then there are the 9 tracks that were released on Studio Outtakes 2002, notably the studio chatter and tuning included in the second take of Just Because have got their separate own space. These outtakes are musically complete, probably missing some lead guitar overdubs here and there and obviously some lyrics in part, however most of them feature full fledged tracks with great melodies and a complete structure; clearly the question now focuses on the reason why the band did decide not to release them, not just in 2002 but in the following years too. A note about Dreams, which at times reminds Van Morrison singing style. The impression is that the band shall not be producing itself, but allow a strong personality producer to take such decisions for them. Also included here are a couple of acoustic tracks that are quite out of the overall mood, one of which (Hurricane) was actually released officially on a single cdr for the Katrina hurricane victims benefit in November 2005. The other was featured at the end of Shine A Light DVD, though allegedly coming from the 29 October 2006 Beacon Theatre rehearsals, while the last 4 songs here are the official versions that are found on Forty Licks. Strangely on Cd 2 Hand Of Fate comes before Dance Pt.1, contrary to what happens on LP 3, Side Two.

The whole lot makes up a nice compilation that contributes to give us a glimmer of what could have been, but wasn’t. Packaging is great, but the 4 pages booklet has the same track listing inside and on its back.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
