REVIEW:

This release from Empress Valley aims to celebrate the late great Stones drummer Charlie Watts, having come out less than a week from Charlie’s death, but is a strange one: first of all, it is housed in a single cd disc, then its title is simply Charlie Watts 1941-2021, Hard Rock Stadium, Fl 08-30-19 with no indication it is a DVD nor song titles, unless you consider the OBI, where Farewell to Charlie is written. This is in fact the promo version of Charlie Watts Last Live (EVSD-DVD-3375-027) a silver pressed DVD that was released in August 2021 few days after the man passed away. The concert is obviously the last one Charlie Watts played on, which has also been released as DVD-R on no label Miami Garden 2019: The Video and on No Filter Miami 2019 (ZitRock-RS-19-04), Miami Gardens (2cd and 2 DVD-R) no label and on blu ray as Miami 30th August 2019 (Mission From God-130). The audio is excellent, the video quality too despite having been shot from the audience a few feet from the stage, but the images are clear and steady, in good definition too, but from one camera. This show’s date was changed twice, at first this should have been the tour opening date in April, then it had to be anticipated by one day due the arrival of Hurricane Dorian, a category 4 tropical storm, a unique event in Stones story, so the 2019 US tour ended on the 30th of August, not on the 31st as previously scheduled. On this concert the band returned to play Jumpin’ Jack Flash as opener followed by It’s Only Rock’n Roll, then Under My Thumb and Sweet Virginia too. Other unique things on this concert have been Keith Richards rumoured to have gone to the bathroom after the first intro notes of You Can’t Always Get What You Want and what he said before playing his solo set, somehow able to anticipate the future: this is our last show for a bit, bet he did not know the reason for that. Another notable thing of this concert is that it marks the last time the band played Brown Sugar live on US soil, for the time being. Charlie Watts economical but effective playing can clearly be appreciated watching him play on the b-stage, which in that tour consisted of two acoustic songs, with the three guitars played by the other band members with all the solos from Ron Wood. At the end of the 2 songs set Charlie throws his sticks to the audience they too have become more valuable over time, due to the circumstances. The last 2 songs of the concert were played through pouring rain, pretty much appropriate for Gimme Shelter when the duet started. We said this was the same as Charlie Watts Last Live, but with regards to Miami Garden 2019: The Video here there is also a 2 minutes video collection of the man’ shots with If You Can’t Rock Me as soundtrack.
