REVIEW:

This title has been announced and pushed back from November 2008 and has finally seen the light of day recently. It   was advertised at first as a 2 DVD set containing same clips on disc one and Old Grey Whistle Test 73 and on Disc 2 the Old Grey Whistle Test 1974 with K.Richards Interview, but ultimately it comes out as a single disc with a free photo included on first 250 copies. It now consists of several clips from 8 mm. films of the Stones 73 European Tour synchronized with live music taken from KBFH 73. Clips come from many venues and are generally shortened versions of live songs. They are all in colour and represent the only possible way to get a look at the Stones live in 73 as no version of a private film circulates rather than these clips. It is revealing as there are some stage antics that Jagger never seemed to have performed in future tours as when he laid motionless on the stage during "Midnight Rambler", slowing moving his pelvis as if in a sexual action, or when he came on stage with two huge balloons during "Rip This Joint" shaking them as if they were some gigantic maracas. The length of these clips is about 24 minutes, then they are followed by R.Stones Express, a 12 minutes film from French TV that chronicles the trip organized by RTL radio in order to offer a Stones concert in Bruxelles, Belgium to some Stones fans from paris that were denied the band on stage because of drugs problems. The film in in colour and interestingly presents a portrait of a day in the Stones fans life with interesting shots from Foret National Stadium (afternoon show) with some songs dubbed from Brussels 73 recording. A Press Conference held for Dutch journalists follows, filmed in colour, featuring Jagger,Richards and Taylor answering many questions, most of them already repetitive then, the whole lasting 16 minutes.
After that is the interesting arrival at De Doelen private film, showing the Stones scattered arrival at Rotterdam Recording Studios, we can see interesting clips of fans that chase band members (Keith arrives driving his Mercedes with Charlie on front seat) repeatedly, including some gorgeour groupies. The whole film lasts for about 6 minutes and is followed by alive version of "Gimme Shelter" from London Wembley Arena that lasts for 1.45 minutes with promise that a longer version will soon be available on a forthcoming release. The project contains some interesting stuff, just for die hard collectors, offered in a very well packaged DVD that unfortunately lasts barely over an hour, but that is all that can be obtained from the elusive 73 tour that as far as footage is one of the less covered Stones tours.
