REVIEW: |
This
release presents a silver copy of the new transfer of the Stones opening show
in Honolulu from 21 January 1973 which was
uploaded as Thank You For Your Wine,
Honolulu which was
previously reviewed in here. But instead of just grabbing the recording and
dressing it with new palatable outfit, Golden Egg label at least mentioned the
original uploader and sound technician in the liner notes and that makes a
(small, but significant) change. Here are the liner notes, slightly amended for
grammar purposes:
With no new
album to promote and nothing to lose the Rolling Stones began their Winter Tour
of 1973 in
the Southern Hemisphere. A tour that was to take them back to places where they
d rarely played or brought them to places that they d never played. Two of them
however, Australia and Japan, were
still holding closed their doors to the Stones because of the Glimmer Twins
previous prosecutions for drug taking. While the Ozzies were coy about their
mentioning over who they wouldn t let the band in to the country, the Japanese
authorities were much more open with their causes, blaming Mick s previous drug
use for the suspension. It was decided that the tour would start in one of America s most trusting and tropical states, Hawaii. These three
shows began where Elvis Presley had played the week before, the Honolulu International Center
for his Aloha From Hawaii simulcast and priced at an inflation busting $ 6.73
or $ 5.75. Far removed from the Kings own shows however, the Stones shows were
much louder and aggressive, melting needles in monitors (as opposed to the ones
that littered the Villa Nelcote in France). The overblown sounds to
these concerts left many reviewers weak at the knee, though it did nothing to
sap the bands energy on stage. A long held fans favourite, the Hawaiian shows
are the band at its blistering best. Mick Taylor who at the times was still
having just about a good time as you could when touring with the world s most
debauching band, was on fire, Keith his accomplice in sound was no slouch
either. Bill s bass playing, clearer then ever on this recording is thrillingly
thundering and Charlie is on point as ever. This recording, kindly gifted from
the JEMS archive to the rest of the collectors community, is the perfect podcast
from paradise. Rather than the overbearing, crunchy brickwall as it could have
been, it captures the band at the peak of their touring ambitions and on one of
the right nights too. With thanks to Donn (of the famed taping duo Dave and
Donn) for taping, the rest of the JEMS crew and for Captain Acid for his gentle
remastering skills, we bring you Mahalo Nui Loa, Hawaii, a tape that may very
well be the final and best release of the show you ll hold.

Packaging
is very nice with a colour rendition of the famous Stones cartoon that graced
the first vinyl release on front and nice tracklisting in the same style on the
back, while inside there are many photos from the concert and the liner notes.
