REVIEW: |
This was
one of the hardest concerts the late Stones ever did, due to the weather (close
to 90 F degrees) but also because Mick Jagger had a sore throat; in fact he
must have realized about his problem just on stage, because he got close to
Bernard Fowler after Start Me Up in order to ask him to help out more than
usual. Maybe that happened because he had a fan blowing air into his face, due
to the extreme heat in Lyon even at night. This is why Gimme Shelter was
skipped here and also why there was a long piano section during Sympathy For
The Devil with Jagger using a low register being helped at the end by both
Bernard and Sasha. Concerning the performance we can call this one of the best
shows, despite Jagger being out of sync during Let’s Spend The Night Together,
the bass being too high in the mix, like Jagger vocals and Steve Jordan
drumming not matching the original Watts work on Start Me Up, but the guitars
were ferociously upfront; both Living In A Ghost Town and Paint It Black were
veery full of energy. About this recording it is great to have another IEM
matrix where it is possible to enjoy Out Of Time as well as Dead Flowers in
excellent quality. The title refers to Jagger words where he said hello to all the
Lyon’s football club fans. Anyway, here Empress Valley has improved packaging
offering the 2 discs housed in a real gatefold cover (each disc on its side),
but the overall look is quite dark. Since this concert did not last as usual
two more tracks have been added from Vienna in IEM quality, would this mean we
can expect such complete recording in the future? Hard to say at the moment, so
let’s just enjoy what we got so far.
