REVIEW:

This release presents some Millard recordings as well as some soundboards from the Stoners 1989 US Tour. The first concert here is the Los Angeles Memorial Stadium performance from October 22nd; this show was available on a tape called Live in Los Angeles 1989 October 22nd and from a different source on another entitled Los Angeles October 22, 1989. Then it came out as a 2cdr set in 2008 on a no label release called Memorial Coliseum and just 3 years ago the Millard recordings was liberated via JEMS on another 2cdr set called Coliseum Finale 1989. This is an excellent recording of the last concert in Los Angeles for this tour by the famous Mike Millard who used his usual gear to tape the show.

The first Oakland show is next, it came out as Steel Wheels by the Boy First Night, then on Oakland Stadium November 4 & 5 that included the following day concert, in 2017 was released a 2cdr no label set called Oakland 1989 1st Night which had too much audience participation and finally in 2021 the Millard release cane out from JEMS called Oakland 1st Night 1989: The Millard Master Tapes. This recording, contrary to the preceding one, does not seem to be one of the best Millard ones, too much audience participation and shouts marring its enjoyment. The second concert in Oakland on tape was released as Shakin’ the Bay Asses and on cdr, apart from Oakland Stadium 1989 November 4 & 5, came out in 2022 on a 2cdr set called Day on the Green that presented Millard master tapes. This is much better than the previous day’s recording though

The first concert in Montreal came out at first on a tape called Montreal 1989, then in 2000 on Almost Hear You Sighed Montreal (Rockin’ Rott) , in 2003 was released as Snowed and Frozen Wheels (Pignose 053) missing Tumbling Dice, in 2013 as Montreal 1989 First Night on a 2cd set in soundboard quality taken from Wolfgang’s Vault limited to 250 numbered copies that in 2014 came out on silver as Steels Wheels Montreal (DAC 145) however missing the start of Happy and parts of Satisfaction.

The second Montreal show was first released on a very fair recording as Montreal 1989 Second Night, but them came out as Salut Montreal (Rattlesnake (112-3) in 2002 offering a mono soundboard recording as well as on Le Roues Metallic et les Jumeaux Demons (E.Valley 142-44) a 3 cd set taken from the video. The sane source was used on Paint It White (VGP 309). In 2005 2 tracks (Terrifying and Can’t Be Seen) were released on Training Wheels The Early Steel Wheels Outtakes (Voodoo Sounds) in stereo soundboard, then in 2009 this show was part of the 14 discs set on North American Tour 1989 (WLR 2126); in 2016 it was released as Salut Montreal (DAC 167) that offered the full stereo soundboard in the best possible source. This show was the first soundboard to be released from Montreal and features the famous duet with Living Color on It’s Only Rock’n’Roll.
