REVIEW: |
Here is the
third compilation that has come out in a matter of one week from Sound Blokes
label and this is indeed another great one; in the compiler words:
“All the Stones stereo mixes from Chess and RCA are believed
to be included here and in the best available sound. People are still trading
around crappy old bootlegs made from multi-generation cassettes and there is no
reason for that! So here is everything in one place and sounding better than
ever.”
There is no doubt that this job could be called the definitive
reference one regarding early Stones stereo masters, all tracks are pristine
sounding with no hiss and great channel separation.
“This release was carefully compiled from the best available sources. All
tracks have the cleanest sound and widest stereo image possible. Many of these
mixes are officially unreleased or currently unavailable, inexplicably.” (ask
Abkco for comments, I would add). On Disc One Don’t Lie To Me and Heart Of Stone
are alternate stereo mixes, like on Disc Two Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud,
Think, Paint It Black and the last version of 19th Nervous Breakdown which has
alternate vocals. The Stones in cooperation with Abkco gave collectors the mono
mixes of their early songs some years ago, about time they now devote their
attention to the stereo mixes providing all the available stereo tracks to the
always hungry Stones collectors, meanwhile this compilation will help quench such
thirst. The difference between mono and stereo mixes is not just the latter
being on 2 different channels, but that there may be various diverse stereo takes,
as proved here especially on Disc Two where there are different takes of Satisfaction,
19th Nervous Breakdown, Get Off Of My Cloud and Heart Of Stone not to mention
the alternate takes of songs already known in their stereo shape like Think and
tracks that have just appeared on bootlegs like Looking Tired and Stewed And
Keefed. Yet another valuable release from this label that left us wondering
what could be next.
