Volume 5 of the Stones Touring Party brings us at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on July 21, 1972 offering on Disc One another source for the early show that comes from a newly discovered master. Three Philadelphia shows happened over two days, the Stones intended to record a live album and so all three performances were recorded; although the plan of the live album didn t work in the end, a soundboard recording was broadcasted on air by a FM radio in the US and later released on a famous bootleg called The Great Lost Live Album vol.1 8S .Pig 006)and Philadelphia Special (TSP CD 050, VGP 260, SODD 004) and Philadelphia Special part. II (TSP CD 060).

Until today various releases have come out from such tape, partially presenting the Philadelphia performances, however this is the first time that a newly discovered audience recording sees the light of day. In the past there have been atrocious audience recordings released or not on the market, but what has been recorded in this work is much better sounding and easy to listen. Nonetheless, this source is a cassette more than 46 years old, the first half of the show is the familiar soundboard recording, the second part is available for the first time. There had been no overdubs in the studio and the radio show source was smoothly edited. Longer guitars tuning time have been removed, it seems that the importance of this tape is great. Mick Taylor is in splendid shape and his fluent lead guitar sounds stable all the time here.

Disc Two presents excerpts from the Philadelphia performances on the 21^st  first and second day, the amount of reverberation from the venue diminishes, the performance gradually shifts from audience clapping. Currently out of the From The Vault series live performances officially released by Stones themselves in the Mick-Taylor period have been Leeds and Marquee 1971, Brussels 73   but concerning the 72 tour only Ladies and Gentlemen has come out sporting live recordings from Fort Worth and Houston, and although released in DVD and Blu-ray format, no new remix of the audio was done at the time, even if later the cd of Ladies and Gentlemen was released as it was, so in this work with the latest mastering technology the Philadelphia performance coming from the analogue soundboard master was used.

This allows us to listen in the most ideal manner to these tracks; this can be considered a must have for all those who have been listening to Philadelphia Special for many years.

A new release from the 1972 tour is   something few people could hope for. It seems to have been said that the available source were rough and not so good, no remix work was done at all, the master was just found in the warehouse. As for the first appearance of the tape contained on Disc One it came out in 2017 on a cdr called I Forgot My Hat Today, however, the recording is a bit blurred and buried by an echo; although the sound quality can be said to be decent, there are no muffled or high frequency noises that have come out by equalizing it too much and the recording can be listened normally.

There is a thing that seems to be mainly noise in the right channel mainly when you listen to parts that are cracked much in the second half, but the overall sound is good despite some occasional problems. Thank you for your wine, Philadelphia Jagger sings on Sweet Virginia; the second half of You Can t Always Get What You Want fades out due to the cassette side being changed. Today we known that Uptight - Satisfaction was played as encore, but it is not here (however the version on the cdr came from the July 20^th show).

Speaking of Philadelphia, there are also other audience sources of 7/20 and 7/21 2^nd shows, but of the 7/21 1^st  show exist only the above mentioned 10 songs, so the second half of this show was never heard since 46 years ago including Midnight Rambler that can be finally heard.

If we compare   Disc One with Disc Two, their speed seem slightly different and Disc Two seems to run a bit faster.

Disc Two is a combination of 7/21 1^st 2^nd  shows from a soundboad source which came out in 2017 on a professional cdr called The Philadelphia Project , it is nice here that the bass frequencies can be heard in full; here Love in Vain, Sweet Virginia, You Can t Always Get What You Want and Midnight Rambler are here in soundboard quality for the first time since in the previous versions of Philadelphia Special these tracks came from Ft. Worth 1^st and 2^nd shows.

Although there are different sound output, this is pretty good anyway. In addition the band introduction at the beginning of Bye Bye Johnny heard here for the first three seconds seems the same as on Keep Your Motor Running (VGP 243, MORPH 45).

Uptight - Satisfaction is not present on this disc and since Disc Two lasts 75:02, it is possible that it was not recorded because it could not be placed into an 80 minutes disc.

So, Disc One is for amateurs, but it is an interesting source while Disc Two is a new discovery that is remarkable, something that can be considered more than a bonus. Packaging is nice but the front cover is too similar to volume 4.
