REVIEW:

This release presents a new transfer of the Stones opening show in Honolulu from 21 January 1973 This concert came out on tape as Honey Loo Loo 73, then it was released on vinyl as In Exotic Honolulu (Pig s Eye 8)  missing Happy, Sweet Virginia, All Down The Line, Midnight Rambler and Live With Me; later on 5 tracks came out as Alive and Rolling from the Crater of the Sun (King Kong 002). Later Mick Taylor s Last Concert (Trade Mark Of Quality 001-2).

On compact we got In Exotic Honolulu (VGP 040) coupled with the first show from the following day, then it was released as Honolulu (Scorpio) and then as Tropical Windsongs (Gold Standards ZA 32), also released as Hawaiian Daylight (Shaved Discs TSD 002), Hawaiian Top (Weeping Goat 025-26) mistakenly called second show and Honolulu 1973 (Golden Hit Rec. 130003). Another source without Street Fighting Man came out called Honey-Loo-Loo (OBR 305 CD 024 ) whose title was taken from Jagger initial salute to the crowd.  Then we got Stones Un Exotic Honolulu (SODD 117), The RS In Exotic Honolulu (Akashic Rec.23), Methodical Slow Burn In Honolulu (GFR 476), part of the 8 discs boxset Sweet Tropical Sun (E.Valley 661-68) that was partly copied on Tropical Thunder (OMS 250-53) and then on the 13 cds Tour 1973 (WLR 2135). Lately Honolulu 1973 1st Night (no label) and In Exotic Honolulu (no label) came out in Japan. Tracks from this concert appeared on Live Rarities (RS 9201), Complete 73 Affair (GFR 334-5)

This show was recorded very well and the concert is a great one. Few years ago JEMS presented some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70s and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 10 consisted of The Rolling Stones opening night show of their 73 Pacific tour.

As we said before the original recording was at first presented as D&D Archives Vol. 10, part of a continuing series of recordings made by NW-based tapers Dave and Donn, who recorded in the early 70s and were contemporaries of Stan, the S in JEMS. This is one of Donn s better recordings and out of this came Honolulu Jan.21,1973 (D&D Archives Master Series vol.10) cdr.
Here we come to this transfer, earlier this year, Captain Acid asked if there was access to the original raw transfers which had been done by the late great Jared Houser (the J in JEMS) nine years ago. Shortly before his passing, Jared gave shared all the hard drives containing his transfers and working files. It did not prove difficult to find his original transfers of this legendary Stones recording. Any improvement is down to Captain Acid s work. Speaking of Stan, he is struggling with a major health issue at the moment and could use all the supportive thoughts you can share. If not for him beginning to record shows in 1972, there would be no JEMS.
So, how does it sound? Very good indeed, all instruments can be heard (particular mention for Nicky Hopkins piano during You Can t Always Get What You Want) but there is an overall feeling of unity that can be felt during fast and slow songs, the band is tight and playing with confidence throughout the whole set. This was the first time The Stones had played Hawaii since 1966 when at the end of the show Jagger claimed that had been the last Stones live gig ever. This show features the only performance of Live With Me on this and the subsequent European tour and is also the last time this song would ever be performed with Mick Taylor. All 3 Honolulu shows featured the rarely played It s All Over Now and Dead Flowers, it must also be noted   that there is a strange, unusual harp intro to Sweet Virginia, the song lyrics are slightly changed and Jagger thanks Honolulu for its wine, hence the title of this release. This is the famous show where Jagger said: Very Ancient, Thank You Kindly after It s All Over Now which became the title of a cd that included such song from Honolulu (Scorpio 30).  The performance is sharper and looser than the previous U.S. tour shows in 72. This one is a must have for both casual and hardcore Stones fans and this release from Cpt Acid is a great improvement. The Radio Broadcast at the end presents a brief fragment of the 66 broadast before advertising the 73 concerts.
