REVIEW:

Here are the Art Collins tracks again presented in a box set by WLR with some additions and an extra bonus disc. Nothing much to add with regards to the well known tracks reproduced in the best possible sound; noticeable is Gotta Know You #1 which is stereo and the longest ever Keep It Cool Part 1 & 2 courtesy of Cpt. Acid that clocks in at 30.58 on Disc Nine. Disc Eleven is interesting since it has tracks coming from various IORR members who published them recently, namely all the 6 known versions of My First Plea from the 1978 RCA rehearsals as well as the Jimmy Reed jam. Just 4 different version of My First Plea were known (takes 13,15,32,33) before a post appeared on IORR message board claiming 2 new slightly versions have been found. The new versions are close to number I and II, Keith Richards is on vocals and the length of both tracks are absolutely identical, but the piano parts are diffrent. The quality is as good as a tape can be. It is hard to tell which take numbers are correct, but possibly :

version 1 is very close to 2, but has no piano at the very first seconds, the regular piano part starts later, from 0:52 onward, so this take should be coming before take number 13; version 2 is take 13, known as My First Plea I with piano in the very first seconds, the regular piano starts earlier than on #1, continously from 0.21 onwards. Version 3 is very close to 4, but has no 'honky tonk' piano part from 1.51 to 2.10. It might be take 14. Version 4 is take 15, known as My First Plea II and has a 'honky tonk' piano part from 1.51 to 2.10. Version 5 is take 32, known as My First Plea III.
Version 6 is take 33, known as My First Plea IV. Finally Jimmy Reed Jam might have been the inspiration to do all the other versions of My First Plea. Three dropouts have been fixed here.

Mext come all 6 versions of Criss Cross, 2 recorded in Jamaica at the Nov.Dec.72 sessions (not 3 as claimed in the booklet) and 4 in London in the spring of 73. This disc ends with 4 versions of Living in a Ghost Town, the Stones most recent studio effort, but these are all officially available; however the Acting for Others edit (version #5) is missing. It provides a nice listening pleasure, except for the torture of listening to all the various mixes of Too Much Blood. All in all this box is a good collection of these famous outtakes.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
