REVIEW: |
This
release claims to have the last twentieth century live recording of Silver
Train, however it is not known if the song was played on one of the concerts we
don’t have any document (Newcastle and Birmingham second shows, Innsbruck,
Aarhus two shows, Gothenburg first concert).
Anyway the first concert in London on the 1973 European Tour had this line-up:
Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica)/Keith Richards (guitar, vocals)/Mick Taylor (guitar)/Bill
Wyman (bass)/Charlie Watts (drums)/Billy Preston (piano, organ, clavinet)/Trevor
Lawrence (sax, percussions)/Steve Madaio (trumpet, trombone, percussions)/Bobby
Keys (sax, percussions)/Stu (piano; just on selected tracks). Recordings from
London first concert appeared on tape in fair quality as The Complete 1973
Wembley Takes, A Silver Train To London First Night and on three 4 cdr sets
called The Wembley Tapes 1973 (Real Secrets 10-13) and Empire Pool 1973/ The
Complete London Tapes (Sounds of Satisfaction 730907-9) as well as on The
Complete 1973 Wembley Tapes (Rockin Rott). Other cdr releases include
Heartbreakers in Wembley, Come Back London 73 and London September 7, 1973 Empire Pool. From this
concert Silver Train has appeared on silver on Greatest Dane (VGP 045) as bonus
track. There have been two versions of
this show: the first one London Empire Pool September 7, 1973 and the other
came from a trade from a German Stones-fan years ago-without any cover so Mr.
No. created the covers and named this version A Silver Train To London. Now because
of a recent post these versions have been compared and it was decided to
work/play on this show. Silver Train from
Greatest Dane
(VGP 045) has been
used as speed reference and therefore the source coming from A Silver Train To
London had to be decelerated by -8,48%. So it was decided to use this
correction rate for all the other tracks too and here is this new Frankenstein
production n. 50.
Of course the recording is of poor quality but here, hopefully it is more
listenable, in fact Disc Twio is better than Disc One. The version used here is from A Silver Train In London, lots of little defaults
(microgaps, noises) have been deleted, some segments amplified and of course
decelerated of 4’48%; band introduction has also been given a track on its own.
Lastly as bonus was added the German TV report from ARD TV program
Kätschap which was first broadcasted on
October 20, 1973. The content is a Mick Jagger interview from the press
conference held on September 27 (unfortunately with voice over by a German broadcaster)
and excerpts from Munich,
September 28, 1973 second show. The sound is hissy in particular on the
audience parts so treble frequencies have been reduced to make the listening
more pleasant. This is a great document of the less known London 73 concerts and gives the opportunity
to listen to the fantastic work of Mr. Taylor! Channels have been duplicated in
order to get a punchier sound.
