REVIEW: |
I
f you overslept
on New Years Day or were watching football and were not on YouTube, most likely
you missed the 8 hours availability of a hundred some unreleased Stones
outtakes and live performances from 1969.
Some call it the holy grail, some say they
would have expected higher quality from the Abkco masters. Some sources are
incredible, while others may have seen similar quality on bootlegs in the past.
Regardless, it s here and worthwhile! Presented in chronicle order with the
audio watermarks removed.
Skeletunes originally was only going
to issue tracks previously unavailable on 6 discs but then decided to put out
the whole ABKCO YouTube dump. So, it s now on 10 discs rather than 6 .In their
haste to release this quickly, there is some dead air on a few tracks that
should have been removed and a few double edits. However, we think you ll find
plenty here to treasure!
So here we
have all that was placed on that YT channel RS69TRX and we ll examine
everything disc by disc. On Disc One we have 14 songs from the first Oakland 79
show for some reason missing Live With Me, however these tracks are in the
usual mono audience quality, so it is not clear why they have been published,
how good a copyright preservation will be for concerts recorded by someone in
audience? This first discs ends with 2 songs from Fort Collins in surprising
good quality, actually Honky Tonk Women is preceded by a brief show introduction
but the song fades away after 2.06 minutes, then comes Brown Sugar taken from
the Hot Rocks 2LP first pressing that featured different mixes of this song and
Wild Horses, however
although recorded
in 69 these racks came out officially in 1971.
Disc Two
has the other Oakland concert, missing again Live With Me, Little Queenie and
Street Fighting Man, this is peculiar as we know Bill Graham recorded (and
later broadcasted) songs from this concert in soundboard quality, albeit in
mono; here the beginning of I m Free is repeated twice, should have been edited
out; unfortunately they forgot here to delete the watermark that mars
Satisfaction, what follows after Honky Tonk Women is the Introduction (with 30
seconds of dead air) and the first song from Los Angeles 2nd concert,
one more live song from Phoenix, a version of Gimme Shelter featuring alternate
vocals (that ends abruptly at 3.59) and quite strangely a 1978 rehearsal
version of the same tune from the Woodstock Rehearsals. Discs 3 and 4 are
weirdly set up with the former having the first 9 songs from Champaign for a mere 40 minutes and the
latter the remaining songs plus 7 from Madison Square Gardens 27 November, it
would probably have made more sense dedicating each show to a disc. Anyway on
Disc Three Track 2 has Street Fighting Man (unlisted) that comes and goes amid
dead air seconds through the end, what an agony is listening to that, but that
was Abkco uploading mistake! The mood changes rapidly when the Madison Square Garden
show come due to they being in soundboard quality, albeit in mono. On Disc Six
unfortunately the first Honky Tonk Women (with alternate lyrics) is cut
abruptly at the end.
The last 2
Discs are devoted to Altamont which is presented in mixed formats plus 3 more
outtakes, Wild Hoses from Hot Rocks(different mix) and the version with strings
and glass harmonica and You Got The Silver sung by Jagger.
Packaging
is really peculiar, it consists of
a
large plastic box that on the outside reminds the old VHS tapes box (the
artwork is in fact similar to that one) and inside has 4 plastic cd holders
that house 1 disc per side (plus front and back case), there is however a small
note informing customers to pay attention when trying to remove the discs since
these cases are notorious for breaking discs if people try to extract them
without pressing hard the button inside the disc and use all four grasp points
without forcing the discs which will eventually break. An 8 pages booklet has
each track source provided.
So this is
most likely the only release that is presenting all of the Abkco uploads and
despite some gaps, dead air and unintentional cuts, could somehow represent an
historical product.
