REVIEW: |
This release
which has no observable label number is a copy of StonyRoad-Glimmerman Prod. 01-04
Voodoo Lounge songwriting sessions which came out in early September 2021 on
IORR message board and presented newly discovered demos and outtakes from the
preparing sessions for Voodoo Lounge, in the words of the original uploader: “Over
20 years ago Glimmerman was contacted to write the liner notes and select the
songs for what became Voodoo Residue and for this task he received 4 one hour
tapes, which are those whose content is here reviewed. Here are incomplete
songs, songwriting in progress which clearly show the process of creating a
song the Stones way; many songs are abruptly interrupted, fragments at times
with saturated sounds, other have flaws and digital noises. The editing process
was complex but no filter was used (differently from Vigotone label) to reduce
the background noise; moreover, it was decided not to give these excerpts any
name in many instances, that is why many are called unknown, but with some of
their characteristics in brackets; some of the titles provided on Voodoo Residue
are not confirmed or just refer to certain vocals or lyrics, something Keith described
as vowel movements”. Now since these were posted with 2 discs for each volume,
meaning the original untouched cassette and the reworked one, this is the
explanation for the letters that often comes after numbers (unknown-Mick Idea’s
# 1b etc.). The sound output is excellent with great stereo separation, at times
excessive saturation shows up though.
Disc One
begins with Jagger humming a melody to a guitar (Mick’s Idea #1) with the next
one that has additional keyboards and electronic drums, Richards is on bass. On
Breakin’ they both sing to guitar and keyboards on the first tale while the
second is instrumental, like Make It Now, this time Jagger on bass. On Unknown
(Keith’s Idea #1) there is Keith at the keyboards and a guitar; on Not Enough #1
Keith is on vocals and guitar while Jagger is on drums and bass: this is what Mick
calls jazz rock. You Got Away With Murder they both sing together and play
guitar, on Not Enough #3 Keith is on guitar and Jagger handclapping, while they
are both on guitar on Glimmer Twins Boogie. Why You Runnin’ has Jagger on
vocals and guitar with electronic drums, on Mick’s Idea #3c Keith is on additional
bass, on Look Out Baby #1 Mick is on keyboards while on #2 there are additional
electronic drums, at the beginning it reminds Continental Drift.
Obviously,
many of these were not in the Voodoo Residue set, but some of these ideas were
already put out, for instance Breakin’ was tried by Keith Richards in April-June
1985 and in August-September 1987; also, it sounds evident that Keith dislikes
the drums machine, as well as synthesizer, but judging from his laughters the atmosphere
in the studio was quite relaxed.
Disc Two
starts with I’m Fallin’ that features Jagger on vocals and keys, while on Mick’s Idea versions he is on guitar except for #5 where he
is joined by Keith on bass; there are many takes of Mick’s Idea where it is evident
his search for a melody that would bind together some riffs, but no attempt
seems to succeed; this is a reprise of In Your Hand from the Undercover
sessions. Anything For You has Richards on piano and vocals, Jagger on
additional vocals.
Disc Three
see the arrival of Charlie Watts on April 30th, starting with an
instrumental that has bits of Monkey Man (but there are still programmed
percussions), which is interesting; the next one has parts that remind Sex
Drive with Keith on keys and that was called Monsoon Rangoon on Voodoo Stew. On
He Loves You So Richards is back on guitar, this has an interesting melody that
should have been developed more. Just Charlie and Keith are on Unknown #6. My Love
Is My Love is an eight minutes long jam which at the beginning seems the starts
of Jiving Sister Fanny, here there is Richards on guitar, Watts on drums and Jagger
on keys, like on Randy Whore. Alteration Boogie is named so at song’s end (by Richards
or Jagger?), while Jagger can be heard talking in the background; just Keith on
guitar and vocals and Charlie on drums on Keith’s Idea #4, the three of them
are instead all present on Get Your Hands Off, while only Richards plays on
Thru And Thru.
The last
disc begins with another take of Thru And Thru followed by Make It Now that has
Richards on keys and Jagger on bass on the first take while Jagger on guitar on
the second. Slips Away is a Keith solo effort a typical ballad where he tries
to sort out some significant riff. Interesting are the Band instrumentals that
have Jagger on guitar, Richards on bass. Goodbye To Love is a cover of the
Marcel song which has all members return to their main instrument, Richards on
guitar and Jagger on vocals and Watts on drums. It’s Funny (aka Fragile) is the
same song Jagger gave to Carly Simon, a tune that features Jagger on bass,
Richards on vocals and guitar, Mick’s Idea #9 sees the return of Jagger on keys
while #10 has him on guitar and Richards on keys like on Band Instrumental #2
but here Jagger plays also some keys. Band Instrumental #3 and I Am Fallin’ feature
just Jagger on guitar and Watts on drums.
It must
have been a terribly exhausting job to de-click all these takes, but the end
product is really worth it, too bad we don’t get stuff like this from other
Stones sessions.
Packaging
is nice with a booklet that presents all track listings, however the times
given for each disc are wrong.
