REVIEW: |
Mick Taylor played the Iridium in New York City for a whole week back in
2012 and this has been his latest solo appearance so far; he went there with
his producer/manager and drummer Jeff Allen, however he hired a legend as
Bernard Purdie (for 2 days) as well as Hamish Stuart on guitar, Max Middleton
on keyboards, Wilbur Bascomb on bass and Arno Hecht on sax. Taylor appeared on Jimmy Fallon s Late Night
on May 9 right before his first couple of concerts. Out of the 12 shows played
in those 6 days the only ones that have not surfaced so far as both concerts of
the 10th,11th and 13th of May (except for 2
songs); the other ones are here including the 2nd concert from the
12th of May that was missing before this release and the 14th
of May soundcheck. Another welcomed addition is the ABC&D of Boogie set
that performed at the Iridium from June 29th through July 2nd
and also appeared on Jimmy Fallon show, their
performance is here included too. It is not clear which concert from the 29th
of June is here included, if it is the first or second show, because both had
been missing before. On the ABC&D concert of the 28th of June
the B is however missing, it happened that Ben Waters forgot to have his visa
on his passport and had to return to Canada, being replaced for that
night only by Bob Seeley.
The concerts
streamed on livestream.com by the Iridium club on their site had different
personnel, adding Lou Pallo on guitar and John Collianni on piano and Nicki
Parrot on bass from the Les Paul Trio.
The first disc starts with the Late Show
Taylor appearance (interviewed by Howard Stern) and music performance.
The first concert is really a nice set very well recorded that features
an excellent version of Fed Up With The Blues. Disc Two is very well recorded
too and has as highlight a great version of You Gotta Move that opens the
concert. The third disc presents the first show of the
12th of May where the highlight is
Alabama from
Taylor0s first solo album. An unusual thing happens during Can t You Hear Me
Knocking when Taylor
adds a new verse to the song that says: what is going on behind those sad brown
eyes?
The fourth disc has the previously unavailable late show from May 12th
supplemented by two spare songs that come from the 10th and
13th of May late shows. The recording starts with I Wonder Why that
has already begun, this is a good in your face recording, the taper must have
been really close to the PA system, however there are no in between songs
dialogues. Highlights of the evening are You Shook Me and I m Tore Down a
Freddy King song that is usually sung midway Fed Up With The Blues but this
time it is complete. The two other tracks come from the 10th and 13th
of May late shows and are Stop Breaking Down and Little Red Rooster, songs
played only then; it is reasonable to believe full recordings of these shows
exist somewhere though. The fifth disc starts with the early show from the 14th
of May when Taylor
played with the Les Paul Trio, this set is interesting because of the rare
Morning Comes that is played here. The second half of this disc is devoted to
Charlie Watts ABC&D of Boogie with
one song played at the Jimmy Fallon show and the set played the
same
night at the Iridium on June 29th;
this set is the other discovery of this release that presents a concert that
was not circulating before and features Lila Ammons (granddaughter of Albert
Ammons) guesting on Trouble, Mean Step Out, Boogie Boogie and Duc De Woogie
Boogie . The last disc presents the 2nd show from the 14th
of May and is supplemented by the previously unknown soundcheck or showcase
tracks
that were filmed by the Iridium
staff and later played after the second Les Paul Trio gig; it is quite funny
hearing Mick Taylor playing the Start Me Up riff, amongst all others. This is a
nice release indeed that will certainly please not just Stones completists but
also whoever loves this classic styled music.
