REVIEW: |
This
release presents the Mick Taylor show recorded at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York. This is the
video recording of the show that has come out in audio format awhile ago
presenting the 1st concert from Saturday the 12th of May;
Taylor s band for this night consisted of Jeff Allen on drums, Wilbur Bascomb
on bass, Max Middleton on keyboards, Hamish Stuart on second guitar and Arno
Hecht on sax; contrary to the label s information on back cover Bernard Pretty
Purdie and John Paris were not there. Let s just say this is a great video and
audio recording, the audio is better than the one that came out for this
concert some days before; as per the video it was shot from the floor right of
the stage at about 50 degrees and is brilliant, steady and clear. The camera is
most of the time on Taylor, catching Hamish Stuart behind him as well; as said
before there was some confusion on band members as the names of Bernard Purdie
on drums and John Paris on rhythm guitar were printed on the tickets but on
that night they were not there, replaced by Jeff Allen and Hamish Stuart who
were not mentioned on the introduction by Taylor. On Late At Night both Hamish
Stuart and Max Middleton have their space for solos, while on Fed Up With The
Blues, O.V.Wright blues masterpiece, sax player Arno Hecht gets through the
song at the beginning but does not have much space to play. After we get
Alabama from Taylor s 1979 first solo album with some excellent slide work as
well as some scatting from Mick; then Taylor s classic show ending Can t You
Hear Me Knocking that here does not benefit much of Arno Hecht saxophone presence;
there is a new verse at the beginning of the song though (What is going on
between those sad and wild eyes). Then there is the show s encore which was No
Expectations that has a false start before Taylor gets into the song s groove. This
recording is excellent as said before: at the beginning the introduction s PM
says that no video and audio recordings were allowed, judging from the amount
of You Tube material and this recording security wasn t that tight, anyway
there is word that all shows have been recorded for an official future cd/DVD
release and that may be the reason of the announcement. Taylor s performance in this early show is
good although he seems a bit tired in a way maybe by the week long set of
concerts.
