REVIEW:

Volume Twenty has the first show from New York’s Lonestar Roadhouse in early November 90. The l ine-up was: Mick Taylor on guitar and vocals, Jon Paris on guitar, vocals and harmonica, Wesley Nagy on keyboards, Wilbur Bascomb on bass and Damon Duewhite on drums.

Two recordings were already circulating from this concert. The one coming from the box of 4 cds had the better sound, but Maidenlane's version could function as a nice and welcome alternative to that recording. All songs have now been edited, recording de-clicked, amplified, both channels rebalanced. Some microphone noises in the tuning have been deleted. Note sound intensity fluctuations at the beginning of the recording and that the very last second of Red House are missing. About Red House it shall be mentioned that it starts with a great long blues improvisation lasting about 12 minutes, whose vocals are different than the ones for Red House with Taylor signing When love don’t come easy….. and then there is an exceptional harmonica solo by Jon Paris. However, Taylor is here backed by a different band with some new musicians, maybe that is why the energy level is higher than usual, allowing him to play one of his best concerts ever. The fourth song in the set is a fast Muddy Waters tune, sung by Jon Paris, but remarkable is also Goin’ South that has a powerful bass solo.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
