REVIEW: |
This
recording comes from a newly spread master tape of soundboard origin of a
concert held at Banksville, New York s Krypton club, a venue that has somehow
always been identified as located at Armonk but that is at Banksville. As
described by the uploader the recording was done with permission from Taylor
that allowed the taper to plug into the sound board and therefore we have a
beautiful recording of this late May 88 show, a concert that has circulated
before but this version is taken from the master tape, still it is puzzling why
it is mono. Taylor s playing is at his best although strangely the guitars and
bass volume are not very high in the mix especially at the beginning of the
concert, somehow unbalanced in relation to the keyboards and drums; that
however does not preclude the enjoyment of this recording that shows Taylor s abilities
playing the music that he better feels suits him with notes stretched due to
his fantastic long vibrato and he is well supported by a versatile band that
allows his freedom of expression throughout blues standards or original tunes
like Goin South that is here displayed for 17 minutes, It Hurts Me Too 14
minutes plus while Can t You Hear Me Knocking is here lasting only 6 minutes.
The 1988 version of Taylor
s band included Shayne Fontayne as second guitarist, Wilbur Bascomb as bass
player and Bernard Purdie on drums. Packaging is very good as far as the visual
side of this release, however breaking this concert in 2 discs is a patent
exploitation by this label, as 90 minutes cdr are hugely available.
