Mick Taylor
s return to the States happened finally in early May when his appearance at
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tv show was followed by a week long commitment at
New York s Iridium Jazz Club; the initial back up band Taylor s band for all
the Iridium nights except the last on the 14th
consisted of Bernard Purdie on drums, Wilbur
Bascomb on bass, Max Middleton on keyboards, Hamish Stuart on second guitar and
Arno Hecht on sax. The final night however was a different band featuring just
Middleton on keyboards and Jeff Allen on drums as they were joined by the Les
Paul Trio (Lou Pallo on guitar, John Collianni on piano and Nicky Parrott on
bass): this double concert was streamed live by Iridium management and here it
is, just the final parts of each show featuring Mick Taylor. The two shows have
slightly different set list, anyway classic live Taylor tuned are featured, on
the first set there is the rare appearance of Morning Comes, a jazz tinged tune
rarely played live that is particularly apt to the ambient scene while on the
second set there is the encore of No Expectations. Taylor s playing is good but not at his best,
it is hard to understand if he is a bit rusty because of the time he has been
far from the stage or tired because of a week with two shows a night just
ending. Anyway there are good moments but also some hesitations at times and a
sort of lack of fluidity in changing to and from slide on the same song. The
Les Paul Trio accompanies the songs with some sort of academic approach and
although at times gives a different flavour to the music, other times their
playing is a bit too scholastic to be remarkable. It was a good night though
and hopefully more to come, on a previous night it was announced the shows were
recorded for a future official release, maybe on the newly born Iridium label?
