REVIEW:

This one could have contended for one of the best U2 boots ever, IF Godfather Records would have sought out tape sources instead of the Mp3 sources they opted for!  The concert and recording are just outstanding, capturing U2 at the peak of poplarity and on their home turf in Ireland too!   Please!... someone track down the tape and release this!

So, we'll tackle the sound first.  The taper(s) for the Dublin and Cork concerts captured excellent shows in beautiful stereo quality.  The problem is that this recording has been obtained through tainted means in an Mp3 format.  The annoying accents on the high end of the music with that "shrilling" and "swirling" sound around the cymbals and high notes gets unbearable at times.  Not to mention the distortion that occurs on the original tape, it gets accented here when it appears.  There is a slight break from those levels about half-way through "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" but comes back during "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on the Dublin recording.  It's really too bad because you want to get into this concert!

The cover art boasts that this is "The Full Concert" but the intro to "Stand By Me" is cut and I'm not certain that this is the opening tune.  The packaging is certainly stellar, featuring black & white photography form the Joshua Tree period with gold accents on the graphics.  All comprised in a high quality triple foldout sleeve.  Classy.

The people at The Godfather Records need to shore up their efforts and start properly sourcing their material.  The choices on what to release are fine...just go the extra step(s) and get yourself some tape sources!
