This Blue
Ray-R presents the whole Concert for Sandy Relief which happened on the 12th
of December 2012 (hence the fore title 121212). It starts with a poignant 4
minutes documentary which shows many reports of the event and after switching
back soon to Madison Square Garden for Bruce Springsteen that opens the
marathon concert and he is joined by Jon Bon Jovi (but will return the favour) for
the last song,
just like Roger Waters
that is joined by Eddie Vedder. Bon Jovi plays a greatest hits set and after them
comes up Alicia Keys for two songs followed by Eric Clapton whose two songs are
very appropriate for the event. After him come the Rolling Stones who, probably
not to spoil their own Pay per View that happened just three days after, played
only two songs. The Who present a
set
very close to one of their concerts though with a nice blend of tracks from
both Tommy and Quadrophenia interspersed with some of their immortal classics,
however ending with Tea & Theatre from Endless Wire from 2006, a fitting tribute to
the departed band members Moon and Entwistle. After the Who it s Billy Joel s
turn, another New York
icon
who couldn t have been left out
here. From Coldplay Chris Martin comes on stage to play three songs, two on
acoustic guitar, one from REM with Michael Stipe and one at the piano. Then it
is Paul McCartney who plays two different sets, the first presenting some
Beatles and own hits (with Diana Kroll guesting on My Valentine) is a bit soporific
and the second where he is joined by the surviving members of Nirvana (a pretty
unlikely coupling) for two numbers before the final encore which is this time
Live And Let Die. The event is closed by Alicia Keys joined on stage by the New
York-New Jersey Heroes for Empire State of Mind. There is still room on the
blue ray though for a bonus which will please Beatles-McCartney collectors
since his Saturday Night Live set is presented (again with Nirvana survivors)
that happened just 4 days after again featuring members of
Nirvana.
Blue Ray is
certainly the best medium for such long concerts as in just one disc the whole
3 hours and a half can fit in high resolution; it is however puzzling as a Blue
Ray recordable can be called Limited edition as the label claim on the back
cover since they can produce as many as needed, otherwise it would not have
been on a recordable disc.
